52117 don’t know why
Hi there,
So, in case you aren’t aware, I am a 24 year old woman who currently resides with 3 guys who are roughly the same age.Â
While this is fabulous sometimes, i.e. when they encourage me to go to the gym, or discourage me from eating cupcakes, or when they’re making me laugh and pushing me out of my comfort zone.Â
Other times though, it is beyond frustrating, i.e. when Josh doesn’t clean the bathroom that we share, when dishes sit in the sink for 4 days, when boiled eggs from Easter stay in the fridge and make it a toxic wasteland. Not that any of those things would ever happen, they’re just examples.
However, this evening, I found a new frustration in the form of Josh.Â
A little backstory.
Josh and I became random roommates in 2012. We lived in some off campus housing and were randomly assigned along with another guy named Matt. Now, for the first 4 months of living together, I couldn’t stand Josh. He was a total asshole. He made racist jokes, homophobic jokes, and just generally was an ass to be around. Matt on the other hand was funny, and the single most charming guy I’d ever met. (Sidenote, it turns out that Matt is a compulsive liar and a sociopath, so definitely don’t believe all of your first impressions) But Matt and I got close, like dating close and it made Josh jealous so he acted out.Â
Eventually we became friends because of our shared love of video games and over the last 5 years, I’ve molded him into a usually kind, considerate, socially conscious human who I call one of my best friends.
As such, I care a lot about him. This is where the problem lies.
You see, Josh is pushing 300 pounds, maybe 310, 315 at this point. He has very little muscle mass and is mostly fat. I don’t judge him for it, I was in the same boat not too long ago, so it’s whatever.Â
The problem is that for the last 3 years, he and I have conversed endlessly about what we’ll do when we lose the weight. All of the adventures we want to go on, all the places we want to see, all the clothes we want to buy, I’m telling you hours of fantasizing has taken place. Now, for various reasons neither of us has hit our goal yet, but I’m making progress and he is not.Â
So, a week ago, I left Orange Theory behind and joined Planet Fitness instead. It’s cheaper, all of my roommate belonged there and Josh said he’d go to the gym with me. Well, I asked him Monday, then Wednesday, then Thursday, and each time he said no. So, apparently yesterday he went and cancelled his membership so that I wouldn’t ask him to go anymore.
Yes. You read that right. HE CANCELLED HIS MEMBERSHIP TO THE GYM BECAUSE THE THREE INVITATIONS WERE BECOMING A NUISANCE.
So I lost it. I did. I lost it, and I don’t know why, it’s not as if his lack of self-betterment interferes with my own, but there is nothing more frustrating than seeing a ton of potential just thrown down the gutter due to apathy and laziness.Â
So I ask him why he would do, and he gives me the excuse that he didn’t want me to ask him anymore, I lose it, I’m livid, he leaves mad, and that makes me more mad, because from my point of view, it’s like…
Oh, you’re mad at me now? You’re mad at me because I cared about you and wanted to help you get healthy? You’re mad that your three roommates asked you to go to the gym? You’re mad that we took your fantasizing seriously and tried to help you achieve your dreams?Â
WHAT IS THAT?!
So, anyway, we’re fighting now apparently and it’s annoying.
I guess I need to let him come to terms with his journey on his own. We all have to decide that we’re ready to change and no one can make that decision for us, but damn it if it doesn’t piss me off to watch him throw everything away.
Here’s hoping he’ll start using the $400 rowing machine he bought 5 months ago.
Until next time,
xx Gabby
