Honestly? While I appreciate all the people I’ve had the privilege to talk to online about the topics I like, I’ve come to realize that talking about stuff in person is something I am always going to prefer - or at least as long as social media works the way it does.
I’ve read/seen thousands of truly amazing, thought provoking posts, comments and videos, and i’ve had discussions/arguments with people online many times. But so often I end up thinking - “if we were to talk, this conversation would’ve been much more productive and meaningful” and “I think we would agree, at least to some extent, if we just talked instead”.
Don’t get me wrong, I *love* the internet. But I think it has a lot to do with the fact that social media are, in the end, a place of spectacle. What you say has to fight in the “””marketplace of ideas”””, it has to fight for attention, it has to assume, instead of asking. The conversation has to be, more or less, linear, the sentences and your thoughts have to be finished, you have to craft your comments whilst thinking about how it’ll sound and come across, because everyone is so antagonistic by default (this might be more of a reddit thing, but lately i’m not so sure).
And in the end, no matter how good the conversation gets, whether you want it or not, you’re making content. You are on a stage.
This is to say - I wish I could just sit at a cafe with some of y’all internet people and talk. Even with those who annoy me. That would be cool I think :)
This is my public apology to the two people I've ghosted. It will continue. Sorry!!
I'm so fucking angry. What a shit day. (I had an okay day, but I've just experienced a small-ish inconvenience and I'm sleepy, so now I hate the entire world and also my life)
I think I'm gonna print out a picture of Simon Baron-Cohen and yell at him whenever I feel frustrated. I think everyone should do that.
