Giljagaur, or Gully Gawk, is the second of the Yule lads to descend from the mountain where the 13 Yule Lads live most of year. When Giljagaur is not delivering small gifts in kids shoes, he leaps down valleys and hides in gullies, looking for an opportunity to sneak into cowsheds and steal milk from poor farmers. The new robotic dairies make this a little complicated for Gully which is why he has slowly taken a liking to legally purchased lattes.

Last night, Stekkjastaur, in English Sheep-Cote Clod , came to town. Stekkjastaur is one of the thirteen Yule lads, the Icelandic version of Santa Claus. In the old days the Yule lads where mischievous and cheeky pranksters who made life hard for rural farmers. Nowadays they’ve become more friendly and fun although each of them still has a soft spot from their more mischievous past. For Stekkjastaur this is sheep's milk, he just can’t help but steal an occasional sip of milk. Unfortunately his stiff legs makes this a risky task.

Icelanders have a wonderful ability to only remember good weather. Ask any Icelander what the weather was like when they were young and they'll reply with magical stories of an all-white, stunning Christmas every year or ice skating on a frosty lake during a slow-motion snow fall surrounded by stars and northern lights.
The reality is this: A few courageous souls will take the risk of going outside, dressed in goose feathers and ice skates they will wind-surf a wrinkly ice covered pond until they are cold enough to go back inside for a hot chocolate.

One of the cornerstones of the Icelandic holiday household is the homemade Christmas cookie. This is a serious business and at this time of year success in life is measured in the number of cookie baked. A good amount is 13 different types. Displayed on the tray are some of the most popular types: The ridiculously complicated and labour-intensive "Sara", the old classic "Vanilla ring" and the "Half Moon" cookie filled with jam - among others.

1st of December:
For hundreds of years Icelanders ate little more than lamb and fish. In the last century things got a little more exotic and every year around Christmas apples and oranges would find their way up north to the pale nation in the Atlantic. This is the key element behind the clementine-craze that overtakes Icelanders in December. The supermarkets fill up with boxes of them and so do workplaces, schools, homes and kindergartens. You'll even find them on the airplanes!

With Christmas just around the corner, we decided this might be a good time to tell you a little bit about Icelandic Christmas traditions. In order to do that, we enlisted the help of the talented Rán Flygenring, illustrator (pictured). So, throughout December, expect to find some Icelandic Christmas customs, illustrated and explained to your benefit.
