Not the most obvious object in the painting, this tiny fly sits patiently on one of the large white moonflowers. The scent of the fish has attracted it. Several opposites are depicted here-The sweet scent of the flowers, the foul odor of the fish and death and life combined. A whirling movement is suggested by the vine and its circular pattern around the composition. We are temporarily part of this world. viewing the beauty and the nature of life. The red cardinal flower-lobelia cardinals is almost extinct from chemicals, and the black-eyed Susan and thistle surround the prominent white Hymenocalis occidentals.
