DCST x ATLA AU
(excuse the poor excuse of hands, this is kinda a sketch)
AU thoughts below break!
The four nations had mixed and merged, no longer divided by boarders. In the modern world, people had preserved the original cultures and traditions, but times changed nonetheless.
Senku Ishigami, an earth bender, had presented as the avatar at a young age, having used water bending to move his chemicals from one dish to the other. He was quickly recruited to train and master the elements. Problem is, he was astonishingly uninterested in being the keeper of balance and wielder of the four elements. Yes, being able to use more than one element made his experiments easier, but he'd much rather pursue science than training all day long.
Just as they were trying to find a solution to their gremlin of an avatar, a strange green light emitted in the sky and wrapped the world in a stone-like coat. Years, decades, millennia had passed while Senku had counted them all, exactly in seconds, not one too much nor too little.
During his quest to revive and rebuild civilization, Senku had realized that the descendants from the astronauts knew about Avatars. The villagers, who didn't even know what a record player was, knew there was an avatar. They said that there was one appearing every few decades and that they could wield all elements. Yes, that sounded nearly right, but...where does the avatar disappear to in the decades between two avatars? And why is the avatar's 'native' element always either earth or air?
Senku had figured that there must be a civilisation elsewhere, where the other half of avatars would appear. Recounting their records, they noticed that the current earth avatar should have emerged around that time.
Sadly, they had much more urgent things to do than search for the avatar, as there was a secret to be revealed and people to be depetrified.
As their adventures continued, Senku had to find the time to train the elements with his new found friends. Much to his dismay, the physical exhaustion made him unable to work too long on blueprints. He had to decide between the elements and science again, but this time it was a harder decision.
He had come to the conclusion to only learn as much as he needed for science, as he picked up the rough techniques quite easily.
One person who was always watching was little Suika. She never received proper training as the villagers did not believe a girl who could barely see could master an element. After Senku made her glasses, she paid much more attention to the training people went through as she tried to remember it in astonishment.

(after the south america petrification)
Suika had woken Senku up first. She seemed much older, wiser, stronger. "I'm the avatar", she told him as he smiled.
Turns out, Suika was the current avatar all along. During her isolation, she had tried to mimic the bending styles she had watched so attentively in an attempt to feel less lonely. She had trained, failed and got back up again.
After depetrifying the other friends, Suika started to train in Senku's stead. He was relieved to be able to focus on science as Suika took over the avatar role. It was the best for both of them, as she really enjoyed the training.
