Random Thought #45: You know what, actually? Wei Wuxian actually had multiple valid reasons to believe that Jin Zixuan was attacking him during the ambush when he had Wen Ning kill the guy on defense instinct. Other than the fact that Jin Zixuan refused to side against his shitty cousin then lunged at him with a drawn sword because he was offended at the thought of needing to confirm that he wasn’t a part of the ambush his shitty cousin was leading, this is actually not the first time that Jin Zixuan has pulled a sword on and attacked Wei Wuxian in a situation that was later revealed to have been easily resolved had Jin Zixuan not escalated the tension to violence with his unwillingness to humble himself and communicate with Wei Wuxian.
During the Phoenix Mountain Hunt when Jin Zixuan is harassing a clearly uncomfortable Jiang Yanli, he gets angry when Wei Wuxian steps in to her defense, even though he only stepped in because once again Jin Zixuan had begun insulting Jiang Yanli to her face, in an isolated area where no one would see if anything went wrong, then got physical with her when she attempted to leave! Then, angry at being called out by Wei Wuxian for his continued piss poor behavior towards Jiang Yanli, Jin Zixuan literally attacks them! The sword glare he slashed out had to be deflected by Lan Wangji! Like, imagine what would have happened to both of them had Lan Wangji not deflected the attack, cause Jiang Yanli, the woman Jin Zixuan was supposedly attempting to woo, was in the crossfire, too! Both in situations where he dislikes them and in situations where he’s trying to make amends, Jin Zixuan acts violently belligerent towards both Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli during most of these scenes. It’s literally impossible to tell if he’s harmless, cause even when he’s being genuine, that doesn’t preclude him resorting to violence when his ego is threatened!
Wei Wuxian gave him multiple chances during the Qiongqi Pass ambush to clearly state that he was not a part of the ambush, and with his history of attacking first and explaining only when forced to, Jin Zixuan decides to lunge at Wei Wuxian first with a sword he’d drawn in anger in hand and explain afterwards. But unlike the last time he did this, Wei Wuxian had Wen Ning and a lot less patience for his bullshit. I’m sorry for Jiang Yanli and Jin Ling that they lost their husband and father. I’m sorry that Jin Zixuan’s death was the death knell that condemned all of the Wen remnants and Wei Wuxian. But I cannot be sorry that Jin Zixuan died. He deserved it for refusing to learn the most basic deescalation tactic of not physically attacking the person you are trying to convince you mean no harm to during a tense situation.
