Wait what if Michael meets Jude Perry instead of Jon
Yes, yes I know, āoh no but then Jon wonāt get marked by the desolation! Itāll wreck the story!ā Hear me out.
They fuckin hated Gertrudeās guts cause she screwed stuff up for them.
Jude knows Michaelās the archivist, though the vibe doesnāt come through immediately, cause⦠well, spiral.
Michael also knows sheās important, but I think while Jon gets information in the form of words, Michaelās knowledge-grab stuff actually is more visual/vibe-based, cause thatās what his brain works best with. Processing words is annoying.
So instead of the information dropping into his head as āJude Perry- member of the cult of the lightless flameā like a computer spitting words out of a search engine, his eyes āfocusā again and he sees the symbol of the lightless flame cult somewhere on her, and remembers a bunch of random images heād felt from statements she was involved in in some way.
The mental image folder goes away, and the lady sits down.
Introduces herself, though she doesnāt need to, and holds out hand for handshake.
But Michael isnāt comfortable with handshakes. (This is in italics simply cause I realized how amazingly perfect this is, and it didnāt even click until just now- I love it when this happens :D)
She assumes itās cause flame cult but heās like āno no I just donātā¦ā *Buffering, trying to figure out how to explain indirectly* āhands. They donāt feel good.ā
She bursts out laughing.
The conversation goes well enough. She notices heās not being too prying about his questions, I think, and he warms up a little bit to her, (pun unintentional but still totally there and perfect).
I feel like Jonās method of asking just has the vibes of āTell me or Iāll rip it out of youā, (cause he WILL), while Michaelās is⦠well, more indirect, and what basically ends up happening is that the person doesnāt even know what he did until the conversationās over. Like casting āfriendsā on a person and then asking a bunch of questions, or something.
So Michaelās just got a better charisma buff than Jon, basically. /j
Anyway, they actually have a proper conversation about stuff, and Michael tries his best to explain a bit about how he got hurt by Gertrude. (Not all of it. Heās not sure he should, just yet.)
Judeās internally like āoh fuck yes, vengeful ex-assistant whoās literally in the most important position at the institute, came to me for shit, this is Christmas!ā
And then he remembers something.
And⦠nervously ā mentioning she doesnāt have to talk about it if she doesnāt want to ā asks her if they⦠killed Emma Harvey.
āNope- ⦠we did kill her assistant⦠that one little candle that Harvey went and burned out too fast⦠donāt remember her name, though, but I sure do remember her face!ā *cackling*
He starts nervously unraveling the napkin.
Jude asks him whatās wrong.
Honestly⦠he doesnāt know. Sheās been giving him answers, sort of, and she doesnāt seem totally evil, but.
āCan you ever⦠not hurt a person?ā
āOnly if you want that fire to burn out.ā
And proceeds to explain herself similarly-ish to how she did in the original episode.
As the story progresses, Michael can feel his nails getting sharper, and the ends of his hair becoming more tangled and spiraling outwards just a little. He⦠understands the feelings sheās describing, and itāsā¦
Theyāre⦠not the answers heād wanted.
But they were the answers that heād been expecting, on some level.
She seems to kind of snap out of her zone once the story ends, and notices his hands, and the other bits of him that have bent and twisted a little.
She looks⦠a little bemused, but in an almost curious way.
āSo youāre working with two now, archivist?ā
He asks what he means, and she laughs, joking about him not knowing the basics, at which he gets really frustrated, and says something along the lines of āwell, Iāve got someone to blame for that, havenāt I.ā
She grins and says she likes his spirit (or something) and tells him he might want to use a flamethrower the next time he wants to go on a rampage. (Possibly a suggestion like āhey you should totally join our desolation cult, youād be greatā I think?)
(Unknown to either of them, Michaelās appearance got noticed by someone.)
Michaelās already been touched by the Vast, so itās Jonās turn in the falling chair. Maybe Michael manages to get a message to him through the mirrors? Not sure.
Also Jude goes up and is like āby the way.ā And puts a hand on his shoulder, initially like a friendly pat, but it quickly starts to burn. āThatās for tricking me into spilling things.ā
ā¦Ow.
Though tbh it could have been worse- if sheād really been angry or hated him, she mightāve planted her hand(s) on his face or something. Shoulderās not as painful. Nice one, Michael! /pos

So Michaelās not really āthe distortionā in the Unwinding AU, as Iām sure yāall might have noticed- at least, not in the ādisorienting, not-quite-right, infinite hallways that you enter through a door thatās not supposed to be thereā sense.
Heās a mirror. A reflection.
The embodiment of this shit:
And also this shit:
Also the feeling that your reflection isnāt fully you, I guess? That your perception of yourself doesnāt match what you see in the glass. That your perception of reality, what youāve known all your life, doesnāt fit the image that the mirror shows.
And because heās also got some eye aspects, thereās a āperception of othersā aspect to it, too.
People tend to project onto him/see themselves in him, without really realizing it. Without meaning to, he automatically mirrors others and what theyāre doing/how theyāre feeling and thinking about things. This makes it easier for him to befriend others, sort of, but also sort of makes it so that they donāt really know him super well? He just knows them, not the other way around.
If that made sense, great! If it didnāt⦠damn.
Anyway, this has been: random infodumps by aster. Thanks for going insane with me.
So at the office, while he was away, Michael was basically considered to be a Threatā¢ļø because everyone had wound up seeing or hearing about what had happened to Leitner. Elias being like āoh he just needs some time to work himself outā but in a weirdly sinister way does not help his case.
Jon eventually gets into his own bit of trouble because of the possibility that he could have been an accomplice, has to run away like he did in the original series.
Actually, Michaelās not fully considered a threat by anyone⦠not anyone who actually knows him, at least.
Melanieās opinion? Yeah, he was a little weird when she gave her statement to him. Probably evil.
Tim? Heās not responding to anyoneās questions at the moment, and you can kindly fuck off. (Michael saved Sashaās life with the worms, but heās not gonna tell the police that he thinks Jon maybe did it instead with some weird mind controlling powers or something. Theyāll think that itās bullshit.)
Sashaās⦠conflicted. He has been acting weird recently, but sheās not sure heās actually evil, sheās actually pretty sure heās just⦠stressed. People can change, though, so⦠she doesnāt really know what to think.
Jonās. Um. Not there, but heās SUPER sure the guyās gone crazy and is killing people for sport.
[CONTINUED BELOW oh you BET thereās more ehehehe]
Nikola, though⦠oh boy.
Two potential candidates. One of themās rumored to not really know much of anything, and the other knows plenty. But while both have gotten strong, one of themās going to be stronger.
Kickerās that the potentially-stronger one probably wonāt actually fit properly because heās too tall. And heās all twisted, so that wonāt do at all.
So instead, sheās been talking to Jon about the gorilla skin, like in the original series.
Being a super creepy motherfucker and all that.
Yāknow.
Anyway, Michael did not get anywhere near death, so Oliver didnāt have to go in and help out or anything, but⦠Elias has realized that michael keeps getting himself into situations where he nearly gets killed, and does not seem to handle them too well, so heās experimenting and seeing if he can have Jon be a ābackup archivistā, which iām sure Nikolaās absolutely delighted byā¦
Still⦠Michael does get visited by some of the strangerās gang eventually.
Just āchecking in on our dear old archivist!ā
(Michael does not feel comforted.)
(He is also not particularly thrilled.)
(Especially when she casually mentions not being able to use his skin in particular, because it ājust wouldnāt fit rightā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦.! You understand⦠donāt you, archivist?ā)
He tries to burn her with the spiderweb lighter.
No wonder Jude Perry liked him a lot- (heās actually now tried to set two things on fire because they were bothering him- but I havenāt posted the part where he yeets a lighter at the other thing yet lol-youāll see)
Obviously, itās ineffective⦠but it lights up her face for a moment before miraculously snapping shut upon hitting the floor.
Or⦠where her face should be.
Michael screams, his friend finally gets the lights working, and Nikola is gone.
ā¦Fun!
OH HEY WAIT WHAT
OKAY SO
If Michael gets this tape! (Which he definitely would, cause he would have completely missed everything.)
Obviously with a few edits!! But!!!!!!! That shit would just.
Like a goddamn jagged-edged sword getting shoved STRAIGHT through his torso, GOD that stupid bit of commentary would hurt so BAD-
Jesus, Elias, stop trying to make your archivist feel like a disposable paper bag that somehow managed to make it out of the landfill, the hell are you doing, man????
Michaelād probably just try and mirror-jump to Jude Perry or something and be like āhey, my boss is a sick bastard and I hate him, want to help?ā
Not sure if Iām /j or /srs, but Martin might be on board lol
Michaelās having more and more trouble with the whole⦠mirror-hallway trap thing. Although, like with canon, he probably ends up figuring out a way to drag out the whole process of victims slowly kinda going nuts so that he doesnāt actually have to kill anyone, he can just⦠ābother someoneā in order to keep things going.
Which actually winds up working better than the ādrive em mad and then whoop there they goā method.
He doesnāt like how it feels, cause itās basically making a bunch of people go through what Ryan went through, but he tries diffusing the messing-with across more than one victim in order to make it not be as horrible for each of them.
Oh, and on top of that, he still has to get statements.
Does Jon send him the statements he gets (and his own notes on them) after heās done with them, so that theyāre both on the same page with things? (And does it work..?)
And if so, does he get to hear the ādust to dustā one, finally?
*Sound of Michael nearly popping a stress ball open with one hand*
(>:(((( Bruh Gertrude what the fuck)
AND HEARING HIS OWN VOICE ON THE TAPEā¦
Just rewinding and playing it over and over again. Just to hear it.
It hurts to know that his voice doesnāt quite sound the same.
Heās lost the stutter that he hated so much. He almost misses it.
Might actually mumble the words a little, in a half-hopeful attempt at getting his voice to sound like it did back then again. It works, for a moment or two, and in that little sliver of time, he feels like⦠himself again. Like Michael.
But he canāt hold it for long.
Still⦠it was there.
He was⦠there, somewhere. He wasnāt completely gone⦠so maybe there was still hope.
(HhhgfhhHhhHHHHHH I wanna hug him so badddddddddddddd aaaaaaaaaa š« )
Anyway, so Jon gets taken by Orsinov-
And the only reason Michael doesnāt pick up every time Elias tries to call him to tell him to get Jon is cause heās got Eliasās number registered in his phone as āold sodā and just sits there pressing ādeclineā every time the phone starts ringing with that name.
Itās very fun to do.
However, eventually Martinās the one who calls him, sounding a little bit panicked, and explains whatās going on, and Michael feels like an asshole, rushes out the door- (āhello good morning Iāve got to go get Jonathan out of situations he keeps getting in donāt kill me donāt get killed please donāt leave things on voicemail if theyāre important, lesson learned, ohgosh bye-ā)
So the Michael appears! No doom threat, just Michael apologizing for being āso incredibly lateā and being like āoh good lord these are creepy oh sh- youāve got a gag on- Iām very sorry-ā
And he notices that Jonāsā¦. Looking at him, like⦠he wants to ask something, but doesnāt know if he should.
Michael⦠forces a smile, getting the feeling ā based on the last tape heād gotten from jon ā that he knows what he wants to ask about. āCan we⦠tā¦t-ā oh, of course- and just at the moment heād rather it not be an issue, here it was, again, in the way of him getting his words across. āIt- I- We donāt- there isnāt much⦠much time to share⦠stories.ā
āShe wonāt be back for-ā
āI just donāt want to.ā
He didnāt mean it to come out sounding so snappy, and winced a little at his own voice. āSheā¦sheās just⦠a bit of a hard subject, as of right nowā¦ā
Jon looks a little bit⦠desperate, though, and it occurs to him that he most likely hasnāt been able to get any new statements in days.
If he were to go through the mirrors⦠he might not be able to keep himself together in there. Or he might get lost, orā¦
āAsk me.ā
Jon blinks, looking a bit confused. āDidnāt you say you-ā
āYes, I know. It doesnāt feel good, but if you donāt-ā he takes a deep breath, and sighs heavily. āPlease. Just⦠this once. And itās all⦠good.ā
ā¦āWhat was she like?ā
Oh, that question hurts.
A string of expressions pass across his face as he tries to think of the words for the things Jon wants to pull out of him. Needs him to let out.
āā¦different⦠she- she told me a lie.
I thought I knew⦠why she was who she was. Why I was⦠her⦠assistant.
I- but i didnāt. Really. She was cold⦠and⦠I just fell for it.
He takes another deep breath and sighs, but⦠no, it⦠isnāt done, is it.
It all spills out, like blood gushing from a deep, arterial wound.
He tries to twist it, to lessen the tearing sensation that the eye gives as it drags the information out of him, but it just⦠happens. The words arenāt quite his to control.
The Sannikov trip is the most painful to feel.
Once, it might have been a tale told in horror, of the near-death experience of his mentor, the old woman who fell over the side of a ship in the middle of a storm. About how he almost went insane, but that could have been a dream, and she had been saved, and then they had gone home again.
He told Jon all of this story, the statement riddled with sarcasm and frustration, and hurt.
And then he told⦠a different story.
The one heād had in that vision, or dream, or nightmare- whatever it had been.
He told the eye what it already knew, and ā in a way ā begged it to answer him, instead. Tell him if he had just been⦠a pebble to be kicked into a trap so that it could be made safe to pass through.
He explained his fear that Gertrude had, in fact, killed one of her old assistants, a woman named Emma Harvey. Sheād burned her alive.
And then he recounted his terror upon waking up in the office that one horrible night, when the doors had not been the right doors, and had nearly taken him and swallowed him and taken him apart.
How the fire had roared around him.
The rest of the story, Jon already knew, and so his talking should have ended there.
But he mentioned something he didnāt want to.
About how much Jon had reminded him of her, when theyād first met.
And with this revelation, the story ended.
At once, Michael slid to the floor, his whole body drained of energy, fighting to keep itself together.
It was not a moment too soon.
A door had opened behind him. A horribly familiar one, and as it loomed over Jonās bound form and Michaelās barely stable one, a voice floated through the room, coming from the figure standing at its threshold.
āThat was a very, very stupid thing to do, archivist.ā
Completely forgot to write this into the draft but Michael would have just sat down at the desk, spun around in the chair a bit, then noticed one of those little plaques sitting on the desk with the words āHead Archivistā engraved on it.
Cue buffering/loading/dial-up noises, followed by the sound of his head completely exploding. /hj
Although, it would honestly be even funnier if he saw it, assumed it got mixed up in his stuff somehow, (or just got left there from when this was Gertrudeās office), and went to Jon to ask him if he could take it to Elias for him.
And Jon just gives him a weird look- āā¦Why. Do you want another one?ā (Sarcastically)
āWhat? No- I- I just wanted to give this to someone so they can return it to-ā a little stab of pain upon remembering that Gertrude is no longer head archivist, as heād just been about to say her name⦠āum. Wh-whoās⦠who⦠will be taking over for⦠Gertrudeā¦ā
And Jon is just looking at Michael like heās just asked what color his own hair is, before apparently realizing something and sighing so VERY heavily-
āThey didnāt- Tim. Tim didnāt tell you anything, did he.ā
āWell they were going very well out of their way not to- hold on- wait. Wait, you donāt mean-? You donāt mean ME-ā
And THATāS when his head explodes. /j
Thoughts about this below the cut, just in case anyone wants to know why itās Michael instead of Jon, cause I know it seems unrealistic, but I swear to you, there is thought and reasoning behind this.
So⦠look at this from Eliasās perspective for a moment, if you will.
Jon, obviously, was hired in the hopes of having him replace Gertrude eventually, which would get Jonahās plan under way. But there is a problem for him with this, and it is, unfortunately, a person. And people arenāt predictable. They do not do what you want them to do, no matter how hard you try to get them to do it. No matter how many strings you tie around their necks, they will wind up finding a way to follow some other path than the one youāre guiding them along.
Michael is a problem for him.
He had thought he could get rid of him by pulling him back into the archives and setting the whole thing on fire, but somehow⦠he was more than aware that some power was trying to interfere. But he wouldnāt let it take control of his archive.
No. He had to stop it, somehow, and there was only one thing he could do about it.
He had to put Michael in charge.
The man was underqualified enough. And Gertrude had done the job of preventing him from having access to any of the knowledge heād have actually needed in order to run the archives, so naturally, Jonah could control him as far as he would need to. It was all just a matter of sinking the correct links into him, tethering to whatever boulder he needed to, and letting it roll him off of a cliff.
If he proved to be useful, then all the better for him, he supposed.
[ I donāt like thinking with Elias/Jonahās brain at ALL-
His mind legitimately feels like itās rotten. No, not āoh heās a bad, rotten guyā, I mean currently ROTTING or some shit. To the point where all the bits that might have contained his humanity and empathy are gone, and only the ānecessaryā bits are still there. A corroded, inhuman mess. Guh. I wish I could wash that shit off or something- (/lh-ish) ]
Just realized that if things go generally the same as they do during Infestation and Human Remains⦠and Michael gets Basiraās statement later, and the tapesā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦..
Cause heād DEFINITELY still want to, now more than ever, cause she was the one who really knew things! And he feels completely lost in the middle of everything thatās been going on. He really, really wants/needs to hear some of his old mentorās advice.
(Jonād also be, uh. The way he is in the original canon, to an extent⦠lol. Though this time Michaelās probably his prime suspect⦠for, er⦠odd reasons. Heās ironically worried that some supernatural creature took Michaelās form and killed Gertrude to take the position, which is so close but also no, Jon, heās just as scared as youā¦)
And of course he recognizes some of the files-
God, probably almost cries when he finally hears her voice again for the first time in way too longā¦
ā¦Only to find that sheās⦠not who he thought she was. Not in any way, at all. Every single thing he thought he knew about her has just been thrown to the floor and shattered by the end of the first tape.
The archivist doesnāt know what to do with this information at all.
He just. Is a mess of emotions for a while after this. All of which probably isnāt helped by the fact that Jon keeps looking at him suspiciously/like heās seen a ghost, every time Michaelās around.
CONTINUED BELOW, (this turned into A Thing again lol)
(OH YEAH OK FORGOT TO MENTION UH)
(So basically before this: Michael finally gets jumped by the door, terrified out of his mind⦠and escapes! Though not in the way people usually do it. And as he discovers very shortly after, the method has left a mark.)
(And now heās struggling to fight the occasional compulsion to basically do murder, and he canāt look at his reflection cause itās all warped and stuff.)
(Elias is very intrigued about this.)
(Still working out the details of many different events, which is why those bits havenāt been posted)
Anyway-
So the whole Jon thing isnāt helping him work out how Gertrude basically lying to him the entire time feels, much less how his actual physical/mental/creature state feels.
Not sure how Sasha and Tim are yet, but Martin is probably gonna be nice to have around in the middle of all this.
OOHHHH BOY HELEN
Michael goes for a walk while upset over a particularly world-shattering tape. Sees someone get trapped in door. Hesitates at first, but then runs after her, trying to help. Jon thinks itās him when she comes in for the statement, until Michael comes in JUST after the door closed, cause he felt it open in JONāS office and even if Jon HAS been snarky, itās āfor GOOD REASONā and so he BURSTS in, panicking, and jonās like āAH FUCK- WHAT-????ā
So Michaelās briefly VERY relieved, and apologizes, then realizes that someone else must have been there- then gets the whole story and is mortified.
Just⦠walks away to lie down.
Does not even bother assuming his ānormalā form.
Nearly gives Martin a heart attack when he walks in to make sure everythingās ok- but like heās not even threatening at all, he just seems really, really not ok, so like⦠why panic?
He just asks if Michael wants a cup of tea, and Michael almost starts crying again, but from GOOD feelings this time, and thus Martin keeps Michael from falling down an awful downward emotional spiral simply by fucking caring. I love Martin so goddamn much.
Over time, Michael starts learning more and more about a lot of things, actually. He may have been wrong about Gertrude as a person, but he had been right about her maybe knowing stuff that could help him understand. VERY right, indeed.
And even though he now knows she lied to him, he still finds comfort in hearing her voice. On some level, heās gotten it into his head that maybe she just did it in the hopes that he wouldnāt ever have to worry about these things⦠after all, hadnāt she once said something about how he āreally should be quitting by nowā, or something?
Regardless, he finds that he actually sort of likes the new face of the old woman. She had this sort of fire in her⦠and he wishes he could have really known that side of her. Gotten to experience it a little. I mean, come on- she was honestly a bit of a badass!
And this new image he has of her just makes him miss her even more, on a whole new level.
And then he starts to wonder if maybe she knew anything about the door, remembering how sheād reacted to that awful book, ages ago. Maybe sheād (posthumously) be able to tell him whatās going on with him, and maybe even how to fix it?
So he tries looking through her tapes for anything regarding doors.
He finds nothing.
Maybe⦠creepy mirror-people?
There are a handful of incidents involving that kind of thing, but none that describe his situation.
He does find the one about the stair dude, and has to take a day off work after that, but heās starting to feel pretty sure thereās nothing in the archives that matches anything heās seen.
ā¦Until he stumbles upon that worker-in-clay statement. The one in āsculptorās toolā.
Reads the date on the statement after reading over it, (not aloud, or on tape), and it clicks. The boat ride. The one that he almost thought heād just dreamt because of how bizarre it had all been-
She had said they were going to Sannikov land.
No wonder sheād been so worried about the boat turning around⦠theyād been off to go stop āGabrielā from succeeding in starting the thing that had happened shortly after! But it had stopped⦠so clearly theyād messed it up anyway, thank goodness.
ā¦butā¦
ā¦why hadnāt she mentioned all of this to him beforehand?
If he was supposed to help her in that mission, why hadnāt she told him anything about what they were supposed to do?
How could he help her if he didnāt understand?
ā¦If he didnātā¦
In a moment, all the recent conversations and interactions heād had with with others came back to him at once, and he looked into the mirror at his distorted reflection.
ā¦what was it sheād called itā¦?
āIt is not what it is?ā
Indirect answers. The door. Mirrors. Even his own appearance never quite showed the truth.
And heād been subconsciously noticing how much he relied on the confusion and lack of understanding of others in order to-
No.
He was thinking too far into this- and going based off of almost nothing at all, and-
Dark.
Snowing. Crunching ground under feet and footprints in shifting snow and the world around is wrong. And yet is also right, it knows better, much better, and more than he does, it is more than he is, to it, he is nothing, and-
Map. Door.
Go through.
There is
no
Way
Back.
And he is gone, but no, he is elsewhere, he is
It is there.
The center.
Replace it.
No. No, no no no no no no NO-
The fear crackles and piles up into a buzzing crescendo as the feeling of his entire body being rent apart and reshaped like clay is etched into his brain. And no one is going to save him.
She wasnāt there. She had won. He had just been an offering.
She was satisfied.
He was screaming.
The image broke like glass around him and he slid to the floor, gasping for breath and clutching at his head, hands, torso- reassuring himself that he was still there.
Still⦠whole.
He was still in his office.
Still sort of held the statement in his hands⦠although-
Claws. Laughter, and laughter, and laughter that would not stop-
He frantically shook off the punctured paper with a strangled cry, willing the talons to go away.
His fingers returned to normal.
But the feeling ā that horrible twisting sensation, like his whole entire being was suddenly just putty, held firmly in a pair of hands that were warping and stretching and pulling him apart ā stayed.
ā¦and then, from somewhere in the direction of artefact storage⦠someone screamed.

Holy shit I think I might be able to use this as a way to figure out the general plots of chapters if I ever wanna properly write this out-
Having said that, TURN YOUR GAZE UPON PART THREE OF THIS WRETCHED THING!!!!!
It turns out that not everything in the instituteās extensive collection of artefacts is exactly durable against blunt attempts at slamming them into glass cases.
Although, it should probably have been obvious seeing as the thing he seemed to have picked up to use as a bludgeoning object was, in fact, a vase. Hundreds of years old, priceless, and very, very breakable when you tried hard enough to slam it into something. It shattered into pieces in his hands, one of the shards slicing into his hands as the contents of it fell to the floor.
CONTINUED UNDER CUT!!!!
It took him more than a few moments to realize that the vase seemed to have been made home by more than a few scuttling, eight-legged creatures. And when he did, he screeched, flailing around and knocking things over in his attempts to get the crawling spiders off of his hands and legs. They seemed to not be too keen on touching him, either, fortunately⦠and soon were out of sight, the pieces of the vase vanishing with them.
The next thing he knows, someoneās standing over him with a torch, shining the light down into his face. He must have passed out at some point, and though he could hear the muffled sound of their inquiring voices, he couldnāt make out the words, or see the details of their faces to know who they were.
So instead he clocks out once again.
The next time he wakes up, itās in a hospital bed, arms and chest and other points of injury all bandaged up and tingling from whatever medicine theyād applied as treatment for the burns.
Only then does he finally begin to cry.
So- obviously, itās Gertrudeās fire. But the police donāt know that, and neither does Michael. Nor do any of the other staff members ā except, of course, Elias, who naturally keeps his mouth shut and lies through his goddamn teeth about not knowing anything.
Still, Michael is proven innocent, mostly because thereās no clear, irrefutable evidence that points to him being involved in the fire. He returns to the institute after heās recovered enough⦠only to find his cubicle cleaned out.
For a second, heās about to start crying again, frustrated that heād now lost his job on top of everything else. And Elias hadnāt even bothered to let him know? Whatās wrong with this institute?!!?!
Gertrude had been right- he should have just-
Tim vaults up onto the table before he can finish his thought, and Sasha appears out of nowhere beside him, both of them screaming āSURPRISE!ā and throwing confetti paper into the air.
Trying not to let on that heās pretty sure he just had a miniature heart attack, Michael asks what the surprise is supposed to be, and why is his desk cleaned off. Timās smile broadens at this, and he jumps down with a cheeky, suave grace and gestures down the hallway in a way that makes Sasha snort aloud. āaaaāright this way- your highest-of-honor-y-ness-ā
Sasha canāt help but let out another laugh āTim-ā
āSasha.ā Childishly.
She laughs again, but tries to look at least a little disdainful by way of an eyeroll⦠āOh come on, just let him see what it is before you give it all away in one sentence-ā
Making ācalm downā motions with both hands⦠āOkay, okay, alright-ā
beat.
āIāll just tell him-ā
āNooo, timmmmm-ā
Heās laughing too, now. āOh come on, Iām just joking- hey! Mike!ā Thereās a little mischievous gleam in his eye as he stops Michael and motions towards a door, waving his hands a little for effect. āShowtiiime!ā
And he opens the door.
Itās a decently-sized office room. The desk looks new, and so does most of the rest of the furniture. The only older things in the room⦠are all of Michaelās belongings. Sat there in boxes, waiting to be organized and set up around the room.
āTa-daaa!!!! So, whaddya think. I think it could use a couple windows, but hey, Iām not the archivist!ā
Sasha gasped in pretend horror. āTim!!ā
āUh-oh- whoops! Guess the secretās out now, oh well! Guess I never change-ā
Michael had been staring at him with his mouth slightly ajar for a few moments now, and Tim only just noticed.
āWhoa- hey there, buddy- who pressed your pause button?ā The joking tone melts into something that could probably be described as ālighthearted, slightly teasing, but well-meaning concernā. āSomethingās up, you know you-ā
āMichael.ā
Michaelās face is drained of color in less than a second by the voice thatās coming from behind him.
āOh, hey! Michael, this is Jon! Heās our resident psychopath! āS always listening to everything everyoneās doing around here! Itās kinda creepy!ā
Michael turns.
The man standing there is relatively short, at least compared to Sasha or Tim. Michael tended to try and not compare heights based off of his own, as he was always towering over people no matter how average their heights were. But āJonā was definitely short. Michael almost wanted to laugh aloud at himself for thinking heād been Elias- imagine.
The definitely-short man looked unimpressed by Timās introduction, though the sourness in his face was, at best, only tart enough to curdle days-old milk. He didnāt have the heart, though he didnāt seem to want to show that on his face. The man sighed. āThank you⦠Tim⦠Iāll take it from here.ā
Tim shot the guy a double thumbs-up, and before Michael could ask anything more about what the hell was going on, he and Sasha had left.
Jon cleared his throat politely, though impatiently, and Michael turned to see that his hand was held out for a reluctant handshake.
Michael felt his ears redden a bit, and shifted nervously on his feet, not sure how to explain to the strange, cranky little man that he wasnāt exactly comfortable with doing a handshake. His mind was too much of a mess to even start a proper sentence- so he just settled for sucking it up and trying to go for it, trying not to be too obvious about how much this was making his skin crawl.
But before he can properly begin to shake, the hand gripping his recoils, and Jonās face morphs from an expression of impatient neutrality to one of alarm.
Immediately, Michael starts to apologize. But it doesnāt look like Jonās even listening. His eyes are locked on Michaelās left hand, regarding it as though it might reach up of its own accord and attack his face.
Michaelās words die on his tongue, and the two of them stand there in uncomfortable silence for another moment or two before Michael offers an awkward āit was good meeting youā, to which Jon only responds with a shoulder-shrug and indecisive āmmā before walking briskly away.
Well. That could certainly have gone worse⦠but itās the sort of reaction heās used to getting sometimes. Something wrong with his smile, something wrong with his posture or how he holds the other personās hand, a fidgeting motion the other person doesnāt like, a mispronunciation or misinterpretation of some word or phrase⦠it all just becomes monotonous, repetitive nonsense at some point.
But the worst is when you have to see that other person every single day.
Habitually replaying the interaction in his head to try and see where he might have made a misstep, Michaelās absentmindedly rests his hand on the door handle of his new office⦠and realizes, with a jolt, what has been nagging at him related to Jonās reaction.
Not wanting to look, but still wanting to be sure before making his conclusions, he looks down at his left hand⦠and lets out a relieved sigh. The hand still looked perfectly fine, shaped and exactly the way he knew his hand should be. Perhaps Jon was simply also a texture-sensitive person, and Michael could finally have someone to talk to about things that only ever seemed to make him want to crawl out of his own skin and run away. The idea made him grin as he walked over to his new desk to try out the swivel chair.
Perhaps it was for the best that he failed to notice the way his handās reflection was bending, stretching, and distorting in the mirror that sat in the pile of his belongingsā¦
Ok, so I was very much struggling to comprehend the distortion into-the-door bullshit. While I was trying to write out the description. And I realized that āeverything goes wrongā is honestly probably the best way to put it into words.
Because, listen- this shit is. Itās the kind of thing youād have to actually see in order to āgetā, but even then, you canāt actually āgetā it, cause itās just un-get-able. Yāknow what I mean??????????
Like-
I could try and describe how it feels to try and walk down the āhallwaysā within it. But that would still limit it to what the human mind can comprehend about space and time..??
It- it just isnāt comprehensible-
It beās, and yet it beāsānt.
The closest thing I can think of to it is the game ālayers of fearā, but even that has structure, as all of the rooms and things in the rooms in that game have ties to something in the main characterās memory and whateverās happening in real life and whatnot. Itās the main characterās mindās shattered, warped way of processing the things theyāre dealing with in reality.
The distortion⦠is a-
Well, itās a concept! Basically! It isnāt real, it isnāt processed information gone wrong, it isnāt anything that it is. Itās only a conceptualisation of being. Being what? Who knows! I canāt describe it, because there is nothing to describe, because- because YEAH.
Was that incomprehensible? Good! Anyway, Iām off to try and get that across in very figurative language.
[ps: this post was brought to you by the fact that I literally wrote a variation of āeverything goes wrongā in the draft cause I couldnāt explain anything.]
