Most isekai anime are all about "i wanna be rich" or "i want a harem of six hotties" or "i wanna be uber strong" and all that stuff, it is such a breath of fresh air that this one is about being somewhere where not only can you balance out work and life while making positive contributions but also be surrounded by people who are supportive and absolutely grateful to have you there.

"BuT tHe TiTlE sAyS--" yeah I know and yeah there is a bit of that but only in the proper context and not always on display. She doesn't just bust out the magic power whenever she feels like it and she doesn't use her OP'ness to solve every problem.

I wish more isekai anime were like this. I wish "The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?" was more like this in particular, because I like "oh hey I have to navigate social dynamics and can't just punch everything" but 8th Son fell into one too many stereotypes for me.

Whether accidently or on purpose, I've always fallen in with people who are a handful, are trouble, "got a lot going on", etc. and honestly I'm kind of grateful because all the emotional rollercoaster shit taught me how to hang on, how to be resilient, how to be supportive, how to suss out people who aren't good for me, how to balance loving others with loving myself, and how to find the kernal of goodness in even the worst-seeming situations.

My son is a testament to that and a test of that, and I'm humbled by the good fortune that brought us together, by whatever gods there are or if the gods themselves are us.

but i also love antagonist character that aren’t necessarily evil but still oppose/are opposed by the protagonists and i love stories where it’s hard to tell if the antagonist is evil or not.
