Steve walks in to find Tony right at the elevator, almost like heâs been waiting for him.
âWhere the hell have you been?â he asks.
âAt Buckyâsâ
âYou didnât say anything!â
âJust lost track of timeâ
Steve makes his way to his studio, hoping thatâs the end of the conversation, but Tony grabs his arm.
âIs there something I should know?â he asks, eyes wrought with concern.
âItâs really nothing,â Steve lies.
âWell, itâs definitely something.â Tony lets Steve go before asking, âAre you being honest with me?â
That hurts. Steve realises that this is eating Tony up. It is eating him up too. He turns back and hears Tony say, âNo, more secrets, remember?â
Steve feels like he has been punched in the gut. From the corner of his eye, he notices that Peter is in the kitchen and has heard them. Tony looks at both of them, his expression going numb, and leaves.
âAre you having an affair?â
Steveâs eyes shoot up. âWhy would you think that?â he asks Peter.
âWell, people usually talk like that when theyâre having an affair,â he shrugs and adds, âat least in my experience.â
âWhat kind of experience do you have? Youâre 14.â Steve retorts and realises that his tone was sterner than he would have liked. He sighs. I need to keep my emotions in check, he tells himself.
âI am sorry, that was harsh.â
âYeah, whatever, I donât really care,â Peter replies and walks out.
âIsnât that the crux of the problem?â
âIs it?â
Steve turns to see Tony having the same distraught look as earlier.
âIs whatâs been going on with you have something to do with Peter?â Tony asks.
The catâs out of the bag.
Steve bites his lip. He didnât want Tony to find out like this. Hell, he didnât want Tony to find out at all. He walks up to Tony and gestures him to go to their bedroom. Tony does and shuts the door behind them.
âItâs nothing. Just me probably overthinking or you knowâŚjumping to conclusions over nothing,â Steve tries to downplay the issue again, unsure why heâs not being honest. Itâs not like Tony is buying any of it. He looks at him. He really isnât.
Steve gives him a small smile.
âThis may really be nothing you know. You are just going smack me for thinking like this anyway.â
Tonyâs expression is still grim, but he goes and sits on the bed, arms crossed, and stares right into his eyes. âDo you regret adopting Peter?â
âWhat? No! Adoption was my idea, remember?â
âThen? You have become distant Steve. You spend less time with me. You donât even spare a second for Peter-â
âI donât spare a second for Peter? Heâs been with us for what, seven months? And I already love him with every inch of my being!â
âThen what could it possibly be, Steve?â
âYou know, ever since we moved into this place,â Steve starts as he leans his back on the bedroom door, âsome of my most favourite moments have been watching your genius unfold in the lab and trying to capture every inch of it. Itâs what I look forward to the most. Just seeing you, you in your element. When Peter began to finally open up to us, he began by accompanying you to the lab. Remember how he would stand in the corner and look at you wide-eyed as you showed him around?â Steve walks over to his side of the bed and pulls out one of his sketchbooks and gives it to Tony.
The page he has opened to is a sketch, running over a double page, of Peterâs first interaction with Dum-E. Tony smiles fondly at it. âItâs beautiful!â
Steve sits next to him. Their thighs brush against each other.
âPeter isâŚheâs amazing Tony. Heâs so brilliant and kind-hearted and he has been through so much, but he is so full of love and compassion. I canât believe he is our son. I thought my life was already unbelievable enough with you. But being with Peter is more than what I could ever hope for. Seeing the two of you together is the most beautiful thing in the world. Two brilliant minds breaking their knuckles to find something new to solve, or discover, or invent. He sees you as his father. He does. But me? I am just the other adult in the house. The caretaker. Nothing more. He just never sees me as anything more. Please let me finish. I just⌠I just want a part of him. I know I wonât be able to get what you two have. But just something small, a tiny bit of him,â Steve pushes back his tears and notices Tony is teary-eyed too.
âWhere did I go wrong, Tony? I thought we were, at the very least, becoming friends. But he just doesnât really care if I am around or not. He made a fuss when you couldnât leave the investors meeting in September. That was just three hours. When I returned from Paris after a week, all I got was a âheyâ. I know this is silly. He probably likes being with you more because you have so much in common. Maybe this is really nothing. But I canât help shake the feeling that he doesnât see me as his family. And I do not know what to do.â
Tony intertwines the fingers of his right hand with Steveâs left. âShould we try and talk to him?â
âNo!â Steve nearly shouts. âI shall try being better with him.â
âSteve, you are amazing with him. I know I am no authority on ideal father-son dynamics but I know one thing: you deeply care about him. Off late, you kept being distant. Was it so that you could leave us alone?â
âI didnât want to meddle.â
âSteve! Have you thought that maybe he was reading it the wrong way?â
âWrong? How?â
âMaybe he had a moment, say when he wasnât so open to you. He is a teenager. He has his own thing going on. Say, there were a few of those. And then he notices that you donât spend so much time with him anymore. More importantly, when he sees it is also when I am with him. He probably thinks he is causing a rift between us. I am probably overstepping here. But, what if, because he has lost his family twice, he became closer to me, instinctivelyâŚbecause he didnât see you around anymore? You werenât absent. I am aware of that. When he started having nightmares again, you stood at the door. I could see that you wanted to help and I couldnât understand why you wouldnât come inside. You moron, he did not just want me then. He would have grabbed you too if you were close. He wasnât shunning you, Steve.â
âI messed up! Iâve messed up, havenât I?â Steve breaks into tears again.
âNo, no you didnât. You should have just said this a month ago, Steve,â Tony cups his face, âPromise me you wonât keep stuff from me like this ever again.â

âHow long were you hiding in the lab Mr Stark...? Err..Stark-Rogers?â Woo asked shifting his eyes from the documents to Tony.
âThree hours,â Tony replies, not removing his gaze from his feet.
âAnd this Steven Rogers, he isnât your mate?â
âNoâ
âBut he is listed as your alpha and primary contactâ
âYesâ
âCare to explain?â
âWe are not bonded MrâŚ?â
âDetectiveâ
â...Detective Wooâ
âSo you are not mates but he is your alpha?â
âWe are contractedâ
âI see. For how long?â
âNine monthsâ
âSo Mr Rogers has been your alpha for nine months but isnât your mate?â
âIs there a point to this?â Matt, his lawyer, asks, trying hard to feign his annoyance. âMy client has gone through a tormenting ordeal and has barely managed to save himself from three predatory alphas in one of the most prestigious education institutions in the country and you havenât asked him anything beyond his relationship with his alpha, which I may add has no connection to this case.â
âIâm just trying to cover all my bases,â Woo says.
âThen cover them.â
âRight, so err Mr Rogers, how did you contact your alpha? You didnât have a phone on you, did you?â
âIâm a 17 year old doing three masters, at the same time, at MIT. Go figure!â Tony finally looks at him and gives him a smile.
âRight. Of course. So your alpha and his friend?â Tony nods, âbeat the crap out of them and get you out?â
Maria finds herself a little out of sorts. Just a little. Not that she is an incapable mother -of course not - she isn't-she's pretty sure of it. But her soon-to-be seven year old has a rather unusual wish. You think he would like a new bike or something. Maybe a trip to Disneyland. Yeah all those she could do. But not this. Maybe she could pay someone?
When the day finally arrives, Tony wakes as early as it is humanely possible of him and runs down to see if his gift has arrived. But when he reaches downstairs, no one is in sight.
These things happen though, don't they? Adults are too busy to remember their kids' birthdays. Maybe they didn't want to disappoint him by not turning up - not that he expected them to. But they could surely have tried to fulfil his only request.
Tony quietly walks to the family dining room to find Jarvis with a birthday cake in his hand. And beside him - his gift.
The scrawniest kid he's ever seen - with light blond hair and deep blue eyes - steps up to him and says, 'Happy Birthday, Tony! Err... I don't have friends either... I'm Steve.'
