Writing of Rama’s name plenty of times regularly as a method of worship is followed in various parts of India as a method of worship for lord rama and it is said to bestow upon the devotees all kinds of benefits and also helps in attaining wisdom and final liberation.

This tradition has been followed by people from ages in various forms.  The people of Tamil Nadu write shree raama jayam, the Telugu speaking people right shreerama and in other parts it is Rama or jayshreeram

The first popular scriptural reference to this practice is found in Ananda Ramayana and is later quoted in the mantra manual “mantra maharnava’ with the title rama nama lekhana vidhi. (the procedure of writing rama’s name)

This wonderful practice improve devotion, focus on the lord and his holy name and blesses with various benefits.

राम नाम लेखन विधि (आनन्द रामायणे मनोहरकाण्डे)

शृणुष्व विष्णुदास त्वं यत्तेऽहं प्रवदामि च

तुष्ट्यर्थं रामचन्द्रस्य नित्यं पत्रे तु मानवैः

लेखनीयं राम नाम शतानि नव प्रत्यहं

अथवाष्टोत्तरशतं पूजनीयं सविस्तरं

एवं कोटिमितं लेख्यं लक्षंवास्तु ततः परम्

हवनं  तद्दशांशेन कर्तव्यं विधिपूर्वकं

इदं विष्णुरिति रुचा तिलाज्यैः पायसेन वा

नवन्नेनाथवा कार्यं राघवं परिपूज्य च

युधिष्ठिरस्तु तच्छृत्वा करिष्यति यथाविधि

मासत्रयेण तस्यैव राज्यप्राप्तिर्भविष्यति

अन्ते च परमं स्थानं गमिष्यति मनोर्बलं

इति राम नाम लेखन विधिः

 rāma nāma lekhana vidhi (ānanda rāmāyaṇe manoharakāṇḍe)

śṛṇuṣva viṣṇudāsa tvaṃ yatte'haṃ pravadāmi ca

tuṣṭyarthaṃ rāmacandrasya nityaṃ patre tu mānavaiḥ

lekhanīyaṃ rāma nāma śatāni nava pratyahaṃ

athavāṣṭottaraśataṃ pūjanīyaṃ savistaraṃ

evaṃ koṭimitaṃ lekhyaṃ lakṣaṃvāstu tataḥ param

havanaṃ  taddaśāṃśena kartavyaṃ vidhipūrvakaṃ

idaṃ viṣṇuriti rucā tilājyaiḥ pāyasena vā

navannenāthavā kāryaṃ rāghavaṃ paripūjya ca

yudhiṣṭhirastu tacchṛtvā kariṣyati yathāvidhi

māsatrayeṇa tasyaiva rājyaprāptirbhaviṣyati

ante ca paramaṃ sthānaṃ gamiṣyati manorbalaṃ

iti rāma nāma lekhana vidhiḥ

 O Vishnudasa (devotee of Vishnu) listen to what I am telling you now (carefully with complete attention)

For pleasing lord Rama and getting his blessings, lord Rama’s name should be written regularly

Nine hundred a day or hundred and eight a day and either complete one hundred thousand (1, 00,000) or up to ten millions (1 crore)

Ten percent of the count should be taken and that count should be performed as havana (sacred oblations in fire) with gingelly seeds mixed with ghee (clarified butter) or payasam (sweet rice) – rice cooked with milk and jaggery

by chanting the following mantra

इदं विष्णुर्वि चक्रमे त्रेधा नि दधे पदम् । समूळ्हमस्य पांसुरे स्वाहा

idaṃ viṣṇurvi cakrame tredhā ni dadhe padam . samūl̤hamasya pāṃsure svāhā

Which is ten thousand times if one writes hundred thousand time and one million times (10,00000 times) if one completes ten million times in writing.

Worship Rama with various offerings and services ( shodashopachara pooja)

Yudhishthira will do it as prescribed in the scriptures, and attain his kingdom in three months.

In the end, he will attain the highest abode by the merit of the mantra.

Ramanama is the repetition of the Rama’s name (Rama-nama). Rama is the name of a Hindu diety whose story is told in the epic of the Ramayana, it also literally means “joy.” The repetition of a holy name or sacred word is known as a mantram or a prayer word, and its practice is found in all faiths. But you don’t need a religion to benefit, either. The work of a mantram is to steady the mind on what is real, good and lasting. When the mind is speeding from one thought or idea to the next, this perception of the real, good and lasting is much more difficult to keep in focus.

How immensely practical for nonviolence the mantram is! Imagine if, instead of reacting to fear with more fear or to anger with greater anger, we had this tool to help us steady the mind and see through a difficult situation directly into its heart–we would become more compassionate and skilled in the great art of living nonviolence. (In 2011 i began using this technique. It allows me to cycle further and faster as it focuses my attention. Moreover mantrams allow me to always have truth which is God on my mind. Thus when the opportunity for nonviolence arises i am prepared as i can be - which is to say prepared enough to perpetually improve.)
