Live Short, Love Long!
Remember how you felt Life when you were in Love ? The daily drudgery was seamless because you waited for his/her call. Your whole day existed just for that moment of contact. It didn't matter that your to-do list was incomplete or you didn't get a raise. It was non-stop channel running in your head filled with only one thought- Does he/she loves me ? What is he/she thinking at this moment ? When will we meet again ? It was a singular experience that consumed all your moments during that period.
What if we can see the world the way we saw it when we were in love ?
It's not necessary that you fall in love only with a person. You also fall in love with play. You fall in
love with doing certain activities. Imagine the time you learnt to play cricket or hockey or sprinting against your peers ? Imagine the daily exercise routine or hiking or cooking or learning to play an instrument ? Or writing ? Painting ? There is a joy in each one of those journeys. It's a journey of known steps with unexpected twists and turns. You start cluelessly initially and then struggle before getting better at it and look back with pride on your accomplishment.
As you get older, the experiences repeat themselves. The newness is lost. The mundane takes over. The transactional life becomes overbearing and overwhelmingly numbing your feelings. You are not alive but surviving with clutter and stuck with inevitable, joyless, never ending, redundant loops. It maybe depression or it maybe existential crisis about a life without purpose and even if there was a purpose, it only adds stress to prove your worthiness.
How do you get unstuck ? How do you escape this circular, mandatory existence ? How do you declutter this survival life activities ? In essence, how do you find the joy of being, joy of living, joy of blissful happiness ?
I am no expert but the philosophers and sages who have written about this mid-life crisis, a luxury of the "haves" , have written about this emptiness and a manual to get out of it.
According to them, we need to embrace the uncertainty and the possibilities of future. When the mind thinks far, 10 to 20yrs into our future, and assumes the struggles to get to a place where we think we will finally arrive and live the life we deserve, it delegitimizes the NOW.
It renders the various possibilities VOID. Are we going to win a lottery tomorrow and retire ? Most probably not but what if we entertained that thought and lived today ? What if we give our future all the possibilities and not dwell on them too long?
What if we only think about today ? What if we squeezed every ounce of our joyful moments in the NOW without burdening it with loss of tomorrow or disappointments of past ? What if we lived each day and loved fully without the draining suction of their eventuality ?
Getting unstuck requires us to believe in possibilities. It requires us to live in limited time frame of minutes, hours and perhaps the whole day or even the whole week but never a month, quarter, years and decades. We have to step from one moment to the other, knowing joy is around the corner. We have to deliberately intersperse our day with activities that brings us joy. We have to love selves and be grateful for the privilege of our current situation. The possibilities and dreams are not dead because we are locked into our life situation. We are dead because we see our life as written in stone and decide to give up without trying.
We have to step into the unknown to fully feel. We have to get unstuck by squeezing joy without judging ourselves. It's okay to be sad. It's okay to retreat into our shell. It's okay to be disappointed at the uselessness of our existence. The key is not to spend too many hours or days or weeks in them. The key is to live short each day without a bleak outlook at our unknown future.
Its easier said than done but it is imperative that we move forward in small chunks without the burden of "known future" and experience joy before death takes us on a different path.
