what have been your stepping stones? corner stones? In how many different ways do you love? how many different languages have you tasted? prayer or wish? pebbles or marbles? hard or soft? what is your past made of? what have you chosen and what have you let others choose for you? who have you loved before and why them? what would you be if you could always choose? where do the ghosts go?
i’ve lived my life in steps taken forward, then backward, then sideways. nights spent away from home. sleepaway camp, sleepover, sleeping never. didn’t learn to ride a bike ‘til i was twelve. too afraid to fall.
there is familiar love, comfort love, kind love. then, strange love, mystery love. adoration. but never love at first sight. i’ve tasted four foreign tongues, though i wouldn’t say i’ve fallen deep with any (but i’m trying with one now, every day desperately dissecting the syllables.)
i’d say wish but i always say please, which feels more like a prayer, though i don’t know which god i’ve prayed to. hard, because too much soft makes me suffocate. my past is made of backyard weeds and swingsets and paperback novels. i choose quiet. i’ve let others choose when i should keep living, but then i’ve chosen that myself as well.
i’ve loved tornados in vessels of flesh. i don’t know why. i’ve always loved storms.
