Costa Rica is home to 52 or so species of hummingbird - dwarfing the 2 we see at home on Vancouver Island. The array of colours and displays is also bewildering. The Violet Sabrewing is one of the largest species, found darting between drenched vegetation in the high altitude cloud forest region around Monteverde and the Cerro de la Muerte. Cloud forest is one of our planet's most precious biomes, meeting very strict criteria. They represent high altitude rainforests in tropical zones, accounting for a fraction of the already severely diminished global rainforest coverage. Permanently wet, they receive both vertical and horizontal rainfall in the form of near-continuous cloud presence. Typically located on isolated volcanic peaks, cloud forests contain by far the largest and most varied biodiversity of all land areas, in particular for insect and birdlife. Cloud forest is severely threatened by climate change and we expect to lose a majority of these unique areas in the coming decades.
