I’ve never been a fan of Kesha, not really, I don’t find her music to be my go-to when I’m the mood for the pop-fun style that I identify her for, I obviously know some of her catchy songs and I actually have them on my playlists, but I am not familiar with her albums as a whole. However, I decided to give this album a try, since I heard and read so many nice things about this, and I wanted to give her my support in my own way after all the awful things that she went through with her label and former producer.
The way she opens the album is powerful yet very soft and calm, delivering a very empowered topic in such a soothing way is the first sign of the kind of maturity that is achieved on this record, but as the tracks go by, I realized that there are more layers to her than just a centered person that has grown through serious challenges. There are some interesting songs that don’t try to be princess-like but they go for the 21st-century woman that is unapologetic and knows what she wants and is not whiling to settle for less, I mean Woman and Hunt You Down.
I was surprised with the vocals and lyrics on the album, I have to say I was expecting something more party-like, but I was so happy to see that she was more introspective with the lyrics without sacrificing her fun and quirky style, I was not expecting at all having some hints of country here, but they actually work. My surprise was greater when I saw the collaboration with Dolly Parton, that I must add, I wasn’t sure how that would come out, but it sounded really nice and the song, I’m sure holds a special place for Kesha, since her mom wrote it.
Some of my favorite tracks include Praying, Learn To Let Go, Hymn, Rainbow, Hunt You Down, and Godzilla, I just feel that they all represent different facets of Kesha’s life and show how quirky, fun and empowered her personality actually is, kind of showing me a little bit more of her, since I only knew some of her catchy songs. Spaceship is the perfect song to close the album since is the kind of track that encapsulates her quirkiness and is a way to let us know that she is hopeful and positive about the future while being comfortable with who she is, with all the interesting and even contradictory parts.
I would give the record a nice 7.5 out of 10, but I’m sure that It will grow on me as the replay button gets hit.
