Why Iām not buying a car in the UKĀ ā¦
For me, a car is not a necessity ā I donāt need one to commute, nor to fetch and carry kids, nor āfor independenceā ā so why bother? When I first arrived in the UK I was still in the āSouth African way-of-thinking-mode,ā you know, that one of without a car, Iām stranded thinking!
I soon discovered that public transport in the UK is AWESOME as compared to South Africa. There are busses, trains,ā¦

National Railcards - Family and Friends Railcard @_Railcards #travel #train #familytravel #London #railcards We travel to London in a few weeks and we have taken advantage of a great discount using our family and friends National Railcard. Railcards
Hello happy students!
Iām hoping youāve all done this already, but if not, I have a tip thatāll save you quite a lot of money.
It can be pretty expensive to keep and run a car while youāre at uni, and getting the train home isnāt much better a lot of the time. Thatās why I recommend getting a 16-24 railcard.Ā Ā
You can get an application form from your nearest train station and all you need is a passport photo that they can use and a form of I.D so they can check itās actually you. They sort the card out there and then so you donāt have to wait around and hold up the queue.
Itās Ā£28 for one year and Ā£65 for 3. I know that seems like a lot of money to part with at once, but it is definitely worth it. It takes a third off the price of your ticket. I only go home about 4 times a year, but that has already made paying for a railcard worthwhile. If you donāt believe me, hereāsĀ my example:
(To get home, I get the train from Lincoln to Ely)
A single ticket cost me £20.70 without a railcard
With a railcard a single ticket only costs me £13.65
- Thatās Ā£7.05 I can spend on going out when I get home or just for coffee or snacks on the train.
My four trips home have already paid for my railcard, so itās definitely worth it.
The extra money may help over the holidays, so just keep it in mind.
Happy savings!
- Jade
