listening to bruce springsteen made me think of a fic where derek was the only one to survive the fire and never returned to beacon hills. scott still gets turned by an alpha going through the town. stiles and scott have to figure everything out by themselves, which they (mostly stiles) do. allison gets involved, and soon jackson (he gets turned the same night as scott) and lydia are brought into the fold as well.
they've formed a pack together, bit unconventional but still. if they need help there's deaton, no matter how cryptic he seems and the argents as a last resort. stiles doesn't trust them, not even allison anymore. not after finding out they were responsible for the hale house fire.
stiles was there that night. in the back seat of his dad's cruiser when the call came in. he remembers derek at the front of the house, unable to get in to save his family. stiles remembers disobying his dads order to stay in the car to go to comfort derek despite being only 9 years old. his own grief was still present as ever and he couldn't just watch someone go through what he had all by themselves. his dad wasn't even mad at him when he found them.
stiles hasn't seen derek since that night. he left town after the funerals and stiles still carries the grief of losing his mother so he can't really even imagine what it felt like for derek to lose everyone. it makes it hard to trust any argent after something like that.
so when an omega werewolf dies in the preserve leaving her newly born werewolf baby an orphan stiles can't let scott give the baby to the argents. lydia wants to leave the baby at the fire station under the safe haven law, scott argues that they can't because of his werewolf nature. deaton wants nothing to do with the baby and the argents are the only adults in the know. but stiles can't do it. he knows once scott has decided something it's law nowadays. becoming a true alpha has gone to his head and he just wont listen.
he debates telling his dad everything, but their relationship hasn't really been good in months - his dad probably wouldn't believe him anyways.
it's the fact that scott would give up an innocent baby to a family known to having killed other innocent werewolfs with the packs full support that he makes the half cocked plan. it's looking at the babys little face in his arms that he decides to go through with it. he tells scott that he'll take the baby for the night and they'll bring him to the argents in the morning, no need to bother them this late. as if stiles has ever cared about something like that before.
after he gets home he looks at the little sleeping baby in his arms and wonders if he can really do this. he's only seventeen and knows next to nothing about babies. he knows he's being reckless and impulsive, but looking at the baby that he now regards as his - he knows he can never give him up.
he packs everything he could possibly need and after some debate takes the cash his dad has saved up over the years. he doesn't leave a note - what would he even say? he looks at the house he grew up in for the last time maybe forever. looks at the yard that's overgrown, the mailbox he painted together with his parents. he knows his mom would be proud of him. the thought gives him strength to finally get into the car.
he looks at the baby who has slept through this whole ordeal. the baby for who stiles is leaving his whole life behind. it's two am and stiles can't just keep calling him the baby in his head.
he takes a deep breath and turns the ignition on and looks at baby...eli and knows that it's worth it to run away if it meant keeping him safe.

Amtrak's AEM 7 electric locomotive, a main line-feature on the Northeast Corridor from 1978 to 2016. The 945 (above) was donated to Illinois Railway Museum in 2018.
I took a few trips on Amtrak between Pittsburgh and NYC back in the early 2000s, well before the retirement date for the AEM (I connected with New Jersey Transit at Penn Station). When I saw 945 I thought "Hey! I've ridden behind engines like that!"
As seen on accompanying information placard.
The image above could have been one of the trains I was on in 2005, for instance. The Pennsylvanian that made the journey between the two cities began the westbound leg behind AEMs and made pretty damn fast trips through Jersey, then changed to diesel at Philadelphia for the balance of the route to Pittsburgh (and under a different banner, on to Chicago).
The difference in speeds was notable before or after the locomotive change-over in Philly. As Amtrak owns the Northeast Corridor (and north of Philly it's a pretty straight shot to Newark), the AEMs would, at a guess, rock along nicely at more than 70 mph.
On the way through Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. R. Jake Wood, 2008, quite likely behind an AEM 7.
A little north of Crawfordsville: in the distance I saw the headlights of a southbound freight on the track adjacent to the road. The train was traveling slowly, so there was plenty of time to park for a few snaps.
