28. Familiar cuddle + RaiKane
âIt was carnage, Akane,â Sumire said. âCarnage.âÂ
Maybe it was the pain medication or the sudden lack of appendix making her loopy, but Akane swore her friends were telling her that Raiden hadâŚÂ âHe did what?â she asked, rubbing her eyes.Â
âHe called all sixty-four of the former presidents trying to reclaim their research societies into a shokugeki stadium and told them to come at him,â Sumire explained, wearing a half shocked expression. âThey were all down within the hour.â
The pink haired girl blinked slowly, brow furrowing. âWait. Why would heââ
âHe snapped, amica,â Bella said flatly. âThose losers tried to kick you while you were down and he fucking snapped. That was not fuckboy Yukihira just now. That was some Dark Nakiri shit.â
âThat was the god tongue,â Sumire said, a slight tremor running through her. âTerrifying.â
Akane sighed, shaking her head. She misses two days of schoolâjust twoâand her childhood friend starts traumatizing the student body.
Sumire had just started giving her the play-by-play when the Dark Nakiri in question appeared in the doorway, hovering hesitantly outside her hospital room.Â
âYeah, weâre gonna go, amica,â Bella said, grabbing Sumire by the arm. âWeâll check in on you later.âÂ
Once theyâd made their exit, Raiden came in, gazing at her sheepishly and carrying a wrapped bento box.Â
âHey,â she said, smiling when he took a seat by her bedside.Â
âHey.â The smile was returned, and the look in his amethyst eyes made her glance down, somewhat shyly. âHow are you feeling?â
She sighed. He never did learn how to leave well enough alone. âIâm a little sore,â she admitted. âBut itâs no big deal.â
âDo you need anything? They can bring you more painkillers orââ
She rested her hand on top of his, stilling and silencing him instantly. âIâll be fine,â she said. âJustâŚlie down with me for a while. If you can stay. Obviously, you donât have toââ
âOf course,â he said, squeezing her hand. He got onto the bed as gently as humanly possible, as though he thought her fragile. The Nakiri heir hesitated for a moment before letting his arm rest over her shoulderâa second pillow of sorts. âYou comfortable?â
She nodded. Yes. Truly. For the first time in what felt like years.Â
Akane rested her head against his bicep, as she often did when they were kids, and released a small sigh. Â
âI thought youâd want some real food,â he said after a few minutes, handing her the bento. Â
âYou thought right.â Even before unwrapping the box, the familiar scent of yellow curry wafted up. It was the smell of an idyllic childhood, a puppy love sheâd never quite outgrown. âIâm surprised you had time to make this on the warpath.âÂ
Raiden scratched the back of his neck, looking sheepish. âAh. I figured theyâd tell you about that.â
âIâm sorry I made you show your true colors,â she said, surprised that she actually meant it.Â
âDonât be,â he said.Â
âWhy not?â she asked. He had tried very hard to appear affable and harmless these past few months, and now the facade was ruined completely.Â
âBecause.â He grinned at her. âI can do the worst thing, but if I do it for you, Iâll never regret it.âÂ
Akane leaned further into his chest, trying to hide her blush. âWell, if it helps at all, I like every side of you. Even the dark ones.â
âGood. Now pick something for us to watch while I eat this curry.âÂ
