The Master Plan (Portraits of 119)
Summary: Raiden and Akane, age six, plan the rest of their lives while Jouichirou spectates.Â
In Saiba Jouichirouâs experience, there were only two ways to manage young childrenâdistractions and manual labor. He himself had no particular preference for one over the other, but since Erina would drop kick him into next week if he put her six year old on a twelve hour diner shift, he decided to take the vacation photo route.
His grandson and his preferred pink-haired companion had been scrolling through the pictures on his iPad for the past few hours, making elaborate life plans all the while.Â
âSomeday we should get a house like that in Curacao, right on the beach,â the girl, Shiomiâs granddaughter, said to Raiden. And the kid looked at her like sheâd just explained quantum physics.Â
âYeah, definitely. And then you could go out on the balcony and paint.â
âMhmm. And you can cook me dinner and we can eat outside and enjoy the view.âÂ
âThatâs a good idea,â Raiden said. âHey gramps, can weââ
âLater,â he said, flipping the channel back to his football match. He supposed there were worse things they could be up to than planning a picnic.Â
âCuracao is gonna be our winter home, right?â the girl asked Raiden as they continued to huddle together over the screen.Â
âYeah.â He scratched the back of his head, grinning at her. âAnd we can summer in LA.â
âAnd spring in Paris?â she asked, hopefully.Â
âOf course,â he told her. âWeâll spend autumn back in Tokyo to check up on Totsuki and stuff.â
âYouâre gonna have to check on it more than once a year, you know,â she told him, arms crossed.Â
âYeah, I guess. We can come back every few weeks like my parents.âÂ
âThat works,â she said, appeased for now. âIâd need to see Junko, too.â
At this, Jouichirou couldnât help but laugh. âYou two really plan on living together all your lives?â
The two children exchanged a brief lookâconfirming their plans without wordsâbefore nodding in unison.Â
âBut what happens when one of you gets married?âÂ
They shared the look again, this time a bit longer than beforeâquestion and answer, call and response. Then Raiden simply shrugged. âWeâll get married, right?â
âMhmm,â the girl replied without a second thought. âGrandma Arato says so.âÂ
âGreat gramps too.â
Did they now? That would be just Senzaemonâs way, moving his pieces and casting his web. Would those two even be here now without his meddling and careful curation of the âjewel generationâ? Had thisâthe Nakiri god tongue enhanced by a hyper acute sense of smellâbeen his endgame the whole time?
âHey, gramps, whatâs this one that says secure folder?â
âIgnore that.â
He sighed. For now they were just kids, not pawns in some master plan, and it was going to be a very long day.Â
The Son
Summary: In which Souma almost misses the birth of his son.Â
Souma hadnât been planning on leaving, not with his wifeâs due date so close, but Erina had all but packed his bags and kicked him down the steps of their duplex.Â
âIâm not going to have the kid for another two weeksâminimum,â she had said when he tried to put off his trip for the third time. âJust go to Paris and handle your affairs. Iâll live.âÂ
Because he knew he would never hear the end of it if he didnât take her advice, Souma decided to go. It would be a quick tripâjust three daysâand heâd be back home before his wifeâs next doctorâs appointment.Â
He had just settled into his business class aisle seatâbecause he never got the aisle when he flew with Erinaâwhen his phone started vibrating.Â
âDid they close up your plane yet?â his wife asked, breathless, as soon as he answered.Â
âI think theyâre about to,â he said, glancing around at the flight attendants shutting overhead bins. âWhy? What happened?âÂ
âWell...â She sighed. âIf you want to finish your trip, itâs fine, butââ
Souma shook his head slightly. If he let her go on like this, sheâd still be dancing around the point when he was halfway across the Pacific. âBabe, you kind of have to get on with it.âÂ
Erina scoffed, and in his mindâs eye Souma could see her flipping her hair back in that perpetually disgruntled manner of hers. âWell, itâs not like you need to come right awayââ
âHe probably does need to come now, Nakiri-san,â he heard her personal assistant, Kanon, say in the background.Â
âErina, whatââ
âIt appears that I am slightly in labor, so if you can um...not go to Europe it would beââ Erina trailed off then, turning away from the phone as she released an anguished sounding groan.Â
Oh. Oh fuck.Â
Souma was already grabbing his scarf and carry on from the overhead rack when Kanon came back on the line. âSouma-san?â she asked.Â
âIâm here.â
âI donât know if you got all that, but she wants you to meet us at St. Lukeâs as soon as possible.âÂ
âGot it. Thanks, Kanon.âÂ
An airline employee tried to stop Souma as he exited the plane and started back through the tunnel. âExcuse me, sir,â she said. âWeâre about to close the flight. You wonât be able to get back on.âÂ
âItâs fine. My wife is having a baby,â he explained.Â
âOh, congratulations,â she said, her face changing. âIf you wait a few minutes, we can get all of your luggage out from under the plane.â
âSorry, thereâs no time,â he explained. âIâll ask someone to handle everything in France.âÂ
And from there it was all a race against time.Â
