“No.” The reply was so quiet that it probably could have been overpowered by the sound of a thumbtack falling off a corkboard. Garfield sucked in a breath as he said this, pressing his lips thin together until his teeth fiercely pressed against the skin and it felt discomforting to him.
“Okay, maybe,” he said after a moment of deafening silence. “And just ignore the cushions that don’t match mine or your couch.” He gave an uneasy laugh as he rolled onto his back, staring at the cushioned ceiling he had created for the fort. He glanced over at Rae. “I, uh- I kinda called for reinforcements.”

Hearing her say that, three simple words that he would have loved to hear any other time, just broke his heart. Garfield realized that he was useless right now, and he wasn’t sure what to do. Normally in a situation like this, he could carry her and get help. But right now he didn’t dare to move her. What if he hurt her more?

Walking distractedly up to his apartment down, Garfield finally put his phone back into his pocket. He stuck out his tongue as he fished through the overly large pocket on the front of his hoodie. Gum, snacks, a bread stick from work, and even more items blocked his path. But when he finally found them, he held them up like he had won a new item from a treasure chest.
Before he could unlock his door, he felt a pair of arms wrap around him. When he glanced down he saw familiar hands and he chuckled. “Rae, what’s this for?” he asked, humor lacing his voice. His heart beat for a second as he glanced over his shoulder and grinned at her. “Gimme a sec and I’ll let you in. I just got this new drink the other day!”
