Today we are seeing the second big confluence of energy and metals, Doug Horn, Analyst at CPM told AOL Energy. A grid-scale vanadium energy storage system typically falls within the 1 to 2 MW range and the vanadium itself accounts for about 35% of the total cost of a 1 MW system, said Horn.

Only after the cost of generation and storage of renewable energy matches the cost of on-demand generation from fossil, nuclear and hydro we will we see a transformation of the energy industry.

Under the new rule, technologies like flywheels, compressed air and large batteries would be recognized. They would also be rewarded with higher prices for what they do best: provide faster service and more accurate fulfillment of energy when it's needed.
