Dear Sir,
With reference to your enclosed letter, my sincere regrets for not been able to reply sooner, but I have been away from my home for some time, on business connected with the decease of a relative. Please accept my apologies.
My pre-service experience? None, as far as radio is concerned, for I was with the Tavistock Rep., and learned voice training with them. And as I have only been back in this country for a few months, I have done no regular work, as yet. Mr. Anderson [sic], all I am asking for is a chance to prove to you that I have a good voice for broadcasting, and that if you see, I promise I shanāt waste your time. This means everything to me, so please donāt cast my letter aside, but be immeasurably kind, and help me.
Very sincerely,
Kenneth C. Williams
Letter to BBCās Drama Booking Manager, Mr. David Manderson, in 1948
In a remarkably short time Kenneth had gone from scratching around for the odd small part on air to overbalancing the budget of one the best-known comedies in broadcasting. He eventually appeared in many British radio programmes andĀ joined in the popular radio series āHancockāās Half Hourā (1954-59) with Tony Hancock, āBeyond Our Kenā (1958-64) and its sequel āRound the Horneā (1965-68), both starring Kenneth Horne. Furthermore, KWĀ was a regular on the BBC Radio panel game āJust a Minuteā from its second season in 1968 until his death in 1988.
āFrom a scriptwriterās point of view, you knew whatever you wrote, Kenneth would find something to fit it. And if you listened in coffee breaks of the recordings and so forth, youād hear him doing these extraordinary anecdotes, youād make a mental note and then youād write something that had that voice in mind. If I had one word to sum him up, it would be āversatileā. You could give him anything to do, he could handle it. And handle it in one take.ā
- Barry Took, English writer, BBC comedy advisor & comedian -
Co-writer for two series of āBeyond Our Kenā. Together withĀ Marty Feldman, he created most episodes of 'Round the Horneā.
BarryĀ also wrote Kenneth Williamsās life story for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography in 1996.
āOf course, Kenneth was brilliant, and was always over the top and disgraceful.ā
