This vividly accurate yet sketchy picture of Loitam has evoked various sentiments across the country- outrage to dismissal. ‘He was a subject of racial discrimination’ to ‘He was maybe on drugs’- these are just the two famous extremes carelessly talked and re-talked about in the most of the media. While some of these unverified accounts act as sordid distractions from the administrative negligence and point towards the impatience of citizens to see that justice is being meted out, the fact however remains that without any conclusive evidence; everything at this point of time is mere speculation. As Monika Khangembam notes on the Facebook Group- ‘Justice for Loitam Richard’- it does take time to unravel the truth. And this is true as much for Loitam as for any other person who dies under similar circumstances. However, Loitam’s death has pushed the media and public on a speculative frenzy on if it was a crime born out of Racial Discrimination. With the Parliament completing 60 years of existence, this question holds more significance to the Past and Future of the Country than one imagines.
