"despite everything, it's still you" (hades)
the already heavy stone in the pit of her stomach twists something fierce, and persephone tries to quell the half-nauseous feeling it gives. she swallows back the bile in her throat because it suddenly feels like she’s choking, suffocating, drowning. she doesn’t know why she’d asked, why she’d expected anything else. any other answer. her fingers wring together, curling and grabbing and anything to keep them busy because she ain’t sure she trusts herself to keep her hands to herself if she turns and looks at her husband.
for all his attempts at jealousy, she knows he doesn’t mean it. could never mean it. thousands of years of marriage and he still loves her as much as he did in her momma’s garden that very first day. it’s a harsh slap in the face, a wake-up call. not that she’s ever truly doubted his loyalty to her, but the sheer vulnerability in his tone strikes her in a way she hadn’t expected.
after all the shit she’s dealt him, after he’s raised a city to try and shelter her, after everything, his choice is still her. she doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry. both, preferably but she can’t let it out. not yet. she has to go back up top soon and she they don’t have the damn time to work this out now, even if he does take the train up with her. they’ve too much to work through and it might take all next winter to sort through it all. and then some.
she turns and damn her betraying hands if they don’t reach out for him, reach for his calloused hands and curls her slender fingers around his. she hasn’t initiated contact with him in a good long while. but this is her choice, a silent promise.
“despite everything, it’s still you.” she echos back, and it’s truth. there cannot be and will not be anyone else. it’s as close to a vow they’ve ever gotten. she’ll write to him, this spring. this summer. she won’t let the six months fester between them like an open wound, harsh and unkind. we’ve gotta try, damn it.
“always you.” she promises, as close as she can get to one. “never doubt it. not again.”
