I just finished obsession and like omg wow
Like the dialogue in the movie is so good. So is the scene composition. And omg the characters???? I love it so much. I think theres a lot of great symbolism for women in society, how they are blamed, objectified, and how they are idolized as dolls and concepts rather than people.
One big thing that i loved was when Bear believes Nikki is writing a romance when she clarifies that its a love story.
Bear doesnt understand the difference. He believes in "classic romance" where everything is rose tinted pretty and happy and theres only warm moments. The entire journey is pleasant and unproblematic and constantly in motion.
Nikki wants a love story. It doesnt need constant romance or there be no problems. Instead a love story requires tension and problem, but ultimately the couple rises above their flaws and situation to love each other. It also doesnt mean a love story ends happily. The journey is rough and challenges them, but it teaches them to grow into something greater. But a love story doesnt need to have a happy ending. Tragedy can occur.
Bear's world doesnt want to accept any tragedy. Everything must be perfect for him. He needs Nikki, but he also needs her to love him. Its not two states that can coexist. He doesnt care about the end of the journey. If he did, he wouldve prioritized Nikki's wellbeing and stability so there would be a future for the both of them. Instead he tries to tinker with Not Nikki to get her to be Nikki while still being the romance he wants. He only cares for "romance" (i dont want to call his actions romance because they were truly just his obsession) and when Not Nikki fails to fulfill his prefect fantasy by crashing the fuck out, he switches targets. He sees the possible romance in Sarah. He doesnt consider Not Nikki's possible reactions to Sarah(because realistically, she showed a lot of clear signs of being mentally unstable and dangerous). I, as a viewer, immediately knew that Nikki would kill Sarah.
They both wanted very different things, but Bear forced his will onto Nikki, forcing her to adopt his mindset to fulfill his fantasy. He never cared for having a love story with Nikki. He only cared for having the romance he wanted, and Nikki represented that for him.
