"TRILBY!"
Trilby felt his whole body jump as reality crashed around him. He panted, looking around in a fresh panic, desperately taking everything in.
"Trilby! Trilby, it's okay." said a familiar voice beside him.
Bad Dreams
Trilby had no idea how long he had stayed up. He didn’t care, really. Chris is the number one thing on his mind and he wanted to be there for him.
It all started after they got back from the museum. That night, the nightmares began. Chris would wake up, crying after he had seen Trilby dead in his dreams. He was unable to bring him back. He couldn’t save him in time. He was useless.
But every time, every time he would wake up from these nightmares, Trilby was there. He would always be there to comfort him and tell him “It’s okay. I’m still here.”
It always led to cuddles, late night movie watching, making each other food and even some kissing. One of these nights after a particularly horrible nightmare, their comforting kiss turned into something more passionate. He just wanted him to feel safe, to feel that everything will be okay. The Order is gone now. They won’t be going on field work for a long time. Things will be back to normal soon. That’s what he told him while he was cuddling him and kissing his neck.
That would lead to Trilby being tired. He would fall asleep at his desk while trying to do paperwork, fall asleep in the break room, Philip even caught him sleeping by the coffee machine one time. Chris would jokingly call him “Sleeping Beauty” because he would be sleeping so much. Trilby didn’t have the heart to tell him that he had a reason. He didn’t care. What mattered to him was his fellow demon hunter boyfriend.
It had been 2 months since they got captured and Trilby was making Chris his favorite meal after he woke up from yet another nightmare. He was thinking they could go out and see the stars. Keep his mind occupied. Maybe he should ask him about speaking to a therapist. But, considering his bad experience at the mental hospital, it would be hard. He had to give it a shot.
“Hey, honey. Your food’s ready.” He said, giving him a peck on the cheek as he set the food down.
Honestly, Trilby didn’t mind being here like this. At least it gave him an excuse to not be doing his paperwork. All that didn’t matter to him.
He was the only person that mattered.

this is old but huHGFkjdg I’ve been thinkin ab Miitopia again
here’s boys, also
Claire: If you two broke up what would you do after?
Chris: Is it like, is it just like we didn’t end up working out or did I do something bad or did he do something bad? Because if we just went our separate ways I’d ask if we could still be friends, if I f^cked up I’m gonna try and apologize then leave him alone, and if he f^cked up I’m taking off his fridge door.
Trilby:
Trilby: You’re taking my *what*?!
Museums and Abstract Paintings, A Quinnby Fic, Chapter Seven
Trilby walked into his boss’ office, she’d called him in about a promotion. He didn’t know the details yet but he was honored to be considered for a higher position. He knocked on the door, entering when he was told to, “You wanted to see me, ma’am?”
His boss smiled, “Yes, as a matter of fact I did! I’m sure you’ve been wondering what this promotion you’re being considered for is.” She said, getting straight to the point.
“Yes, I have been.” Trilby said, sitting down in the chair across from her, he noticed a lot of the things in her office had been packed into boxes... that couldn’t be the promotion, could it?
“How would you feel about becoming a minister?” His boss confirmed his suspicions, and his eyes widened.
“Are you leaving?”
“Yes, I’m retiring. And I think you would be fit for my replacement, agent T.”
Trilby paused, shocked, he knew he had a good reputation at the ministry but he didn’t know he was seen as fit for a job like this. “When would I start? There would be training, correct?” He finally spoke. His boss smiled.
“Yes, I’d train you for about a month before you would start the job, and even then you’d have guidance from the other ministers of course. So, will you take the promotion?”
“Yes-it’d be an honor, thank you.”
“No way.” Chris grinned hearing the news Trilby had told the others, “Oh my god no way.”
“You’re gonna be our boss.” Claire said, leaning back, taking in that fact.
“Congrats!!” Walker grinned, “That’s great man!”
“Yeah, good for you. We gotta celebrate later.” Simmons smiled, he was a new face in the group, he’d been working there maybe a month now. A close friend of Walker’s who’s got tied up in one of the other’s jobs and was offered a position at the ministry as a result. He was quiet for the most part, already seemed dedicated to the job. Despite this it was clear he was on the impulsive side, ready to throw aside what was smart for what he thought was right. Chris worried a bit for him, sometimes doing what was right could get you killed real easily.
“I guess so, I’m really shocked, I didn’t expect that I would be considered for a position like that.” Trilby was smiling as well, Chris guessed he was probably excited about the promotion, but also trying to keep his usual composure.
“I mean you’re definitely a good fit!” Chris said, “I’m sure you’ll do great!”
“Yeah! If I’ve ever met someone who could be a minister it’s definitely you, Trilby.” Claire agreed, beaming at the ex thief.
“Honestly I expected Chris to be promoted before me, I mean you’ve been here longer than over half of the other agents.” Trilby admitted. Chris had to fight back a laugh, he seriously doubted they’d promote someone like *him*. Walker couldn’t fully hold back his own laugh. “What’s funny, Walker?” Trilby raised an eyebrow, Chris was surprised by the defensive tone to his voice.
“They’d promote me before they’d promote Quinn, and I can barely keep a secret.” Walker said, “No offense man, I don’t agree with the reasoning at all, but, I mean we all know it’s true. The higher ups have their favorites, not everyone’s lucky enough to be on the list.”
Chris chuckled awkwardly, all too aware of the glare Trilby was giving Walker, “I mean yeah, you’re right. I’m a ‘loose canon’ to them!” The demonslayer did some exaggerated air quotes, hoping to disperse the tension, “Besides it’s too much paperwork, I’d rather die. I like action.” Trilby still didn’t seem okay with Walker’s words, but he wasn’t staring at him like he was about to lunge at him or something.
“Hey, we can go out for some drinks or see a movie after work? I can pay.” Simmons spoke up, and Trilbs turned his attention to the new agent.
“Sounds fun, that movie based on the Stephen King novel is out. We could check that out.”
“Pet Semetary?” Simmons asked, “Never read the book but the movie does look good.”
Chris and Trilby ended up spending a lot of the movie joking about the special effects and how fake it looked, while Walker told them to shut up and watch. Nobody mentioned it when Trilby fell asleep on Chris’ shoulder halfway through, except Claire who said she didn’t understand how anyone could sleep during a movie like that. On the way out her and Simmons were arguing about rather or not it was actually scary, “God they’re acting like an old married couple.” Walker laughed.
“The idea is terrifying, I just think most of us are desensitized to horror sh^t y’know?” Chris shrugged.
“Desensitized is a strong word for it.” Trilby responded, “All of us still have a lot to fear from the paranormal. It’s just stuff like that is so obviously fake.”
“Exactly! Thank you Trilby.” Simmons huffed, “It was so cheesy.”
“Oh screw all of you.” Claire rolled her eyes.
“Says that one that cried.”
“Simmons I swear to the ancients!”
“Fight! Fight! Fight!” Chris began chanting.
“Don’t encourage them-“ Trilby was cut off by Walker joining the chanting, he shook his head, those two could be like children.
“I’m not going to fight my friend you numbskulls.” Simmons scoffed, “It’s just fun to tease her.”
Claire nearly instantly calmed down, “Oh.” She paused, “I’m gonna put salt in your coffee though.”
“She got her pettiness from me.” Walker announced proudly, puffing his chest out.
“Of course she did.” Trilby laughed, unable to suppress a grin. He had to admit Claire could be rather petty, usually it was expressed in the means of pranks.
As the rest of the group said their goodbyes for the day and went home, Trilby and Chris stood in the cinema parking lot. It wasn’t an uncommon occurrence, for the two of them to linger back after their friends had left, Trilby always felt like they were waiting for something. He didn’t know what that was though.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow, right?” Chris asked, a smile on his face.
“Actually, do you want to visit the museum?” Trilby offered, “The art one I like has a new exhibit, abstract art.” Tonight he wanted a bit longer to wait with Chris, maybe he’d figure out what he expected to happen.
“Isn’t it closed right now?” The demonslayer replied.
“Like I haven’t snuck us in before.”
Chris had to admit there was something nice about being in the museum at night. Trilby had bribed the guards enough times that nobody was going to do anything about them being there, and it was nice to have it to themselves.
When they got to the new exhibit they ended up sitting down next to each other, Trilby leaning against Chris. He put his arm without the other without even second guessing himself.
When they agreed that what was said in museums stayed there, they’d ended up almost flirting really. Chris was sure Trilby was only joking around, after all he’d mentioned being the type of person to flirt for fun more than for a relationship. Chris however? Every compliment, even off handed pick up line, every moment staring into the other’s eyes, was fully sincere. He knew nothing could come of it, but having a place where he didn’t have to be ashamed of his feelings, where they seemed almost reciprocated, it was amazing.
He’d spent so long feeling ashamed of the way he loved. He still felt ashamed. But he could forget that here-with Trilbs.
“I’m glad there’s no guards in here right now.” The ex thief hummed, “I’d get in trouble for touching one of the masterpieces.” And just like that Chris was red as a tomato, trying to gather his thoughts enough to get out a response.
“I-I wouldn’t call myself a masterpiece.” He laughed awkwardly, “That’s you, definitely.”
“I’d say we’re both masterpieces.” Trilby smiled at him in a way that made his heart flutter.
“Nah I’m uh-the type of abstract painting where nobody really understands why it’s there.” Chris laughed off his flustered state, clearing his throat.
“… Abstract art is all about how you look at it in my opinion.” Trilby replied, his smile fading. Chris realized the other probably didn’t find his self deprecation as funny as he did. “Personally I see why you’re here, I see a lot in you. If you’re abstract art I’d pay millions to keep you.”
“Aw gosh-Trilbs it was just a joke, you’re gonna make me melt.” Chris muttered, trying to hide his face in his trenchcoat, “There’s no need to get all sappy, mate.”
Trilby wished Chris realized how sincere he was, he wasn’t just being sappy he was being honest, laying his heart out in a way he couldn’t do without guard rails. Of course that’s what the museum was, a guard rail, it’d be so easy to play it off as a joke and leave it behind them because everything that happened here wasn’t spoken of once they left. He felt like he might be willing to throw those guard rails away for Chris, maybe, one day. When people were more accepting, when he’d worked through more of his own issues, when he could without a doubt know Chris felt the same. Right now? He didn’t know. He’d spent so long running from everything he didn’t trust himself not to run from this. But maybe one day.
In the meanwhile he watched Chris melt into his trenchcoat, part of him wishing Chris saw what he did when he looked at the demonslayer, “I’m serious. You’re priceless.” He insisted, “A true work of art, Quinn.” He put a bit more of his weight on the other as he spoke, and he really didn’t think a human being could get any more red without face paint involved. It was cute. Chris was cute.
It was hours before they left, and by the end of it Chris was a flustered mess, and Trilby seemed much more put together, but Chris hadn’t missed the dust of pink on his cheeks, or the sheepish turn his smiles had taken.
“You know one day I’m gonna get you back for messing with me so much.” Chris mused as they walked out together. Trilby chuckled.
“I’d like to see that.” There was a teasing tone to the ex thief’s voice.
Chris smiled, pausing before going, “I’m glad I know you, Trilbs.”
“You know we’re not in the museum anymore, right?”
“And I don’t care who knows it, I’m being completely sincere, my life is better off with you in it.”
Trilby was taken aback by that, the pink on his cheeks growing, “Uhm. You too, Quinn I’ll uh-“ He cleared his throat, “I’ll see you later.”
“Yeah, see you.” Chris couldn’t help how happy that blush made him.
Trilby couldn’t stop thinking about the last time him and Chris were at the museum, and what Chris said. It was just the type of stupid sincerity the demonslayer would drop with no warning. But it gave the thief a type of confidence he didn’t have before.
He even thought of the perfect way to do what he wanted to.
“This is… quite a large ruby. Where did you find this?” The jeweler squinted at Trilby.
“Family heirloom, so how much would you need to take part of it and turn it into a necklace?” He asked, “Money isn’t an issue I assure you.” He couldn’t think of a better way to tell Chris how he felt. He’d just have to find the courage to give it to him.
