âDamn it all,â Milo shouted as he missed the nail yet again, instead hitting his finger with the rock he was using for a hammer.
Talli couldnât help but notice that that was the third time that had happened since theyâd started. Â It could only have been 15 minutes, if that. Â Something was up. Â They said as much to Milo, but all they got in reply were some grumbles about being âpeachyâ that made it clear he was anything but.
âIâll get you some ice for your hand,â muttered Talli before shuffling off to the freezer.
It wasnât a particularly hot day, but the cold mist billowed out of the freezer door nonetheless as Talli searched for something for Miloâs clobbered hand. Â They sighed, their breath mingling with the freezer-fog, enjoying the feeling of the cooler air on their face.
They were quickly pulled from their reverie, however, by a loud bang, followed by a shout, coming from the yard, where Talli had left Milo.
âGod damnit, Milo! Â Just wait til we find the hammer if youâre aimâs that bad. Â Letâs justââ but Talli was interrupted by loud hammering. Â The man wasnât going to have any fingers left if they didnât get back soon, so Talli grabbed the nearest ice-pack and a tea-towel from off-of the floor, and ran back to Milo, practically prying the rock out of the stubborn foolâs hand and replacing it with the wrapped ice-pack.
âI said Iâm fine,â milo growled, ice in his voice, but, to Talliâs relief, he still accepted the pack.
âYou rest your hand for a bit,â Talli ordered as sternly as they could muster, and that was that, they hoped.
Ten minutes later, and Milo was growing restless. Â Heâd started fiddling with whatever was lying around, mostly tapping washers against wooden panels like some kind of useless woodpecker. Â When that inevitably got boring (not a moment too soon, Talli thought to themself), he occupied himself with searching for the elusive hammer, which, to Talliâs dismay, turned out to be even louder than the washer.
They were on the verge of snapping at Milo when an âaha!â erupted from the living room, where Talli had asked as politely as they could muster that he relocate his systematic deconstruction of their tool-crate.
Now he emerged, hammer in hand, trying his best to look like his usual, smug self, but missing, landing instead at something resembling mild amusement. Â As he recommenced his hammering, now equipped with the proper tool, Talli couldnât help but notice that Miloâs hands were covered in dust, grease, and cuts from the toolbox. Â His right handâthe one he was supposed to be restingâwas swollen and bruised. Â The ice-pack was nowhere to be seen.
âYou should take a rest too. Â Youâve been working your arse off as much as I have.â Â He smiled weakly, but there wasnât an ounce of sympathy in his voice as he ushered Talli back inside.
The were starting to worry at this point. Â It wasnât like Milo to be this...irritableâthis stubborn. Â But, they thought to themself, if he didnât want to talk, there was nothing they could do. Â Two howls of hammer-induced pain later, however, Talli was starting to doubt that resolve. Â When they heard the sound of splintering wood, their mind was made-up.
By the time they arrived back in the garden, the bottom shelf of the bookcase was in pieces, Milo poised to take not the hammer to the next shelf, but his own already bleeding fist. Â There were tears in his eyes.
âHey, hey, no,â Talli cried-out as they ran towards him. Â He didnât resist when they pulled him away from the bookcase and into a tight hug, instead just continuing to cry into their arm, neither of them speaking a word. Â When they finally let go of each other, Talli could see that Miloâs eyes were red from the tears, and his nose dribbled uncontrollably.
âWhatâs going on, man? Â This isnât like you.â
A pause.
âMilo?â
âItâs...Itâs Simon.  Heâd been complaining about a sore back for ages.  We werenât worriedâfigured maybe he just needed a chiropractor and some painkillers to get him through it.  Then he started getting sores.  Just wouldnât heal⊠He went to the doctor, andâŠâ
Milo went quiet.
â...and?â
âMelanoma. Â Big one, from the sounds of it.â
âShit,â
âDoctor says they reckon they caught it early enoughâthat if Simon starts treatment soon, theyâll have it before it has a chance to spread, butâŠâ Miloâs eyes welled-up again.  His voice was shaking.  âIâm so scared, Tal.  What if they didnât get it in time?  What if the treatment just makes it worse?  Iâm not even sure we can afford it.  Everythingâs falling apart around me and all I can do is watch.  Siâs been so much more distant since we found out.  I mean, of course he has, but Iâm worried that even if I donât lose him, I still might.  And I mean, look at me.  I canât even keep a bookcase together.  How am I going to keep a relationship together?â
âJeez, Milo. Â Iâm so sorry.â Â Talli offered their hand to Milo and pulled him up. Â âHave you...Have you talked to Simon about this?â Â They disappeared into the toolshed before returning a moment later, carrying a plank of wood to replace the shelf Milo had broken.
âHow can I? The thingâs in his back.â Â He interrupted himself to do some hammering before continuing. Â âGod, I can only imagine how scared he must be about all this.â
âOf course, but can you imagine how worried he must be about you?â
âAbout me? Â Heâs got bigger fish to fry, Tal.â
âDonât be daft. Â You know damn well that you mean the world to him. Â I bet heâs worrying his arse off about the exact same things you are.â
â...I donât know. Â I need to be strong for him, to help him through this shit. Â I just...donât know if I can do thatâmake it through this on my own.â
âSometimes you canât make it on your own, but thatâs why youâve got people like me, and, more importantly, people like Simonâso that you donât have to.â
The two of them lifted that final shelf into place, and with that, the bookcase was complete.
Writerâs Notes
Oh man, this is the first proper short story Iâve written to completion since I finished the HSC 6 months ago, and Iâm so glad I pushed myself to keep trying. Â I know itâs pretty different from what I usually write, but I was in a very different headspace I guess. Â Thanks to @itsthisorcluedojohn for the prompt.
Thought the Discover Yourself meme looked fun. The drawing took me wayyyyy too long.  Floating poses are not easy to draw.  I may have resorted to using a stock photo as my reference.
To get in the spirit of it, Iâm gonna tag my 2 mutuals who I know post their art, @theofficialcurlyhead + @aliya-au-pays-des-merveilles, and Iâm also gonna tag @kapitana-lovelace, @itsthisorcluedojohn, and @trout-jpg because I hope thisâll mean I see more of your art on my dash.
