As an asexual, I wanted to find a close friend to cuddle with without being in a romantic/sexual relationship. A caring friend suggested that I look for a queerplatonic partner. While the idea makes sense, I've been wondering ever since why "queer" is there at all. The definition would not change if it was just platonic partner. The queer prefix seems to be there just for the sake of making the term special, but doesn't that somewhat erase the connotation of the word people are going for? When queer is used just to make some term seem edgy or special it causes the term queer to gain another definition: petty. When everything is special, it's all the same. Word irony. Queer, taking the definition of odd or abnormal, isn't really appropriate to tack on to other random words, such as platonic. There's nothing particularly odd about close friends.
