June 23rd, 2020 || 📚recently read📚 . 🌿White Rage by Carol Anderson. I picked this up as part of the Black Out Buddy Read and wow, it was impactful, powerful and a tough read for sure. This book focuses on how racism is embedded in our society in order to create an unfair system for minorities. There were some issues that I already knew about but it was extremely educational through and through and it opened my eyes to some other issues I had no idea about; for example: the “war on drugs” and how, despite studies showing that Black people are less prone to abuse drugs than White people, they are arrested for drug crimes at a higher rate than whites. Lastly, I was aware of voter suppression strategies but I didn’t know exactly how they worked and holy cow how the hell can we consider the US a democratic country? it’s extremely fucked up. . 🌿Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender. I picked this one up for queer blackathon and oh my god, it completely stole my heart. Following Felix’s journey towards self-love and self-acceptance was beautiful to read. The past two days have truly spoiled me with good reads ❤ The last full books I managed to get through for the #queerblackathon was The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta. This is a coming of age novel in verse that follows Michael a mixed race gay teen as he navigates school, friendships, first loves, and college. This one is so good guys! I love the way this is written, and as an added bonus Dead narrates the audio as well. I am so glad that there are more books out there that deal with being mixed race, and everyone I read makes me feel so seen. Its not something I could find growing up, and if I could it often dealt with serious trauma. What are you reading this weekend? I just finished The Deep by Rivers Solomon and clipping. I have been wanting to get to this one since it was announced and with the #QueerBlackathon happening I knew it was time. I have been listening to clipping for a few years now and most of their songs have this kind of haunting quality, The Deep is one that amplifies that feeling. Like the song the book is much the same, and even though I finished this an hour ago it already begs me to exprience it again. I listened to the audiobook which is read by Daveed Diggs, and it was fantastic.
