Marched in the Lunar New Year Parade with i2i, Asian and Pacific Islander LGBQTIA+ group! They were the first queer community group I went to when I was first coming out. I met so many amazing and wonderful people and I felt so welcomed and accepted. When I was first figuring out my gender identity, I didn’t realize how important race was. I felt out of place in a lot of white-dominated queer spaces but didn’t know why. I thought it was just me. It wasn’t until I joined a community of queer Asians that I realized how unique my experience was as an queer Asian American. Representation is so important and I am proud to be out and visible today.

My Asian Family on Being Queer 

A short (and my first!) video that I made for my final. I spent some time interviewing my family about my younger self, my queer self, and their hopes and aspirations for me. I intended this to be a way for me to come out to my parents and to be a way to facilitate rarely spoken dialogue within my family.  

One of the most enlightening conversations that I had with my family. Or my parents, actually.

I didn’t come out to her in the end. My mom’s portion made my stomach drop and my heart sink, especially since I was going to introduce my girlfriend to the family. During the editing process, I remember going through the footage and editing her part as quickly as I could because I hated hearing what she said.
