Here are some of the things from s5 that made me come up with all of this stuff:

These are obviously just a few, of course I’m talking from the point of view of someone who thinks the Abyss wasn’t actually Dimension X (missing monsters, battle too easy, etc) but rather something else entirely that was put there on purpose. 

This theory started because I was looking at the pages from Brenner’s journal that Dustin finds in the UD lab when I was trying to understand when the “anomalies” started + why Nancy shooting the exotic matter seemingly had no repercussions for the universe. 

We have a wormhole, and exotic matter to keep it stable, but how do we find exotic matter and how do we form a wormhole? 

Exotic matter and wormholes exist only in theory, because they defy our standard physics. But there is a way to make them plausible, or rather a way for which they’re not only mathematically possible but the physics would actually allow them to exist. 

And that is M-Theory.

M-Theory → think of it as a framework in which exotic matter (negative mass) can exist. 

The thing about M-Theory is that it doesn’t operate in 3 dimensions like we do, it operates in 11 dimensions, exactly, eleven. So we have 3 + 7 other curled up dimensions + time. 

What do I mean with curled up dimensions? 

Remember the analogy that Mr. Clarke makes with the ant and the rope? That is exactly what happens here: we see a line, but the ant also sees the circumference and can navigate it → it’s a tiny hidden dimension.

Now imagine Swiss Cheese, but the cheese stretches on forever, and like a static shock tiny bubbles form inside the cheese, imagine these are our tiny dimensions, where different rules apply since the cheese keeps stretching and they move around.

Now we have our framework where exotic matter and wormholes are possible, but how do we form a wormhole? In theory a black hole could be paired with a mirror twin white hole and form a wormhole, which becomes a bridge between two points in time or space. Here is a reference:

The issue about black holes is the “information paradox” that results from the Hawking radiation discovery: information falls in the black hole and is lost through the Hawking’s evaporation process that erases it completely - this is a paradox because in quantum physics no information can be lost. 

There are many solutions to this issue (you can read about black holes’ entropy about this) and one of these is called: Wheeler’s bags of gold → in curved space a surface area can enclose a larger volume (imagine a universe contains another big universe). But this is a paradox: if it’s true then the entropy contained isn’t proportional to the surface area. This made me obviously think about the Wheelers and Mike, but also about all the wheels references we see in the show, like this one: 

Another solution is called the island formula with replica trick, here it’s how it looks: 

Reminded me a lot of this: 

Basically the island formula makes sure the Page curve can be correct and it solves the paradox: the entanglement entropy disappears, black hole evaporates and no information is lost (to make it really really easy).

Extreme forces like the ones near a black hole/wormholes/exotic matter can fuck up physics as we know it: it could be an explanation for the white goo room in the UD lab with Jancy → it didn’t have any sense from our point of view because we think in standard physics terms.

Other two key facts are that: Radio signals can go both ways into a wormhole (particles can go one way and waves can go both ways) and that the Matrix Model, based on nine matrices, has a low energy limit which can be explained by an 11 dimensional universe → Matrix model, M-Theory and wormholes are interconnected. 

So let’s say the anomalies started when Nancy shot the exotic matter, destabilizing the wormhole → the exotic matter kept the entanglement wedges aligned between Hawkins and the wormhole and the disturbance basically re-wired what is entangled with what → information shifted because certain parts of spacetime are now part of other quantum islands = the information is conserved but now it’s not accessible to the characters (memory distortion and weird behaviours). 

If you look at the light cone theory, we can say that the characters’ past is now outside their present (light cone).

It’s like the UD isn’t actually between Hawkins and Dimension X, it’s another part of spacetime behind the wormhole’s horizon. 

This could also explain what Camazotz, the UD, the Abyss and Dimension X actually are: the Upside Down is our Wheeler’s bags of gold (WBG), it has its interior geometry and lacks life forms because it’s grown from entanglement. Camazotz is another entanglement or a memory pocket that MF and Vecna can access, so Henry’s memories are basically encoded inside the 11D bulk. People can access Camazotz and the Abyss because they are 4D projections of Dimension X - they are sub-islands, with low entropy. While Dimension X is actually one of those bubbles we talked about, it’s one of the eleven dimensions, the tenth, actually.

Will connection to Dimension X and Vecna + his innate powers

The fake Hawkins we see in the epilogue

M-Theory = 11 dimensions → 10 spacelike + 1 timelike → the wormhole connects two points in time rather than in space. That is why time is important (November 6th) and also fucked up in vol.2 and 3 (watches not showing time, November 6th not showing the year, 1987/1989 + references to the 60s). 

And if we think of the kids as power sources that Vecna needed to activate, this would bring us back to the Tesseract Derek was building in the classroom when Mr. Whatsit approached him: a Tesseract is used to understand spacetime beyond our 3D, or how events happen across time → it has 16 vertices, so 4 + 12 (4 used in s4 to open a rift in space and 12 in s5 to open a rift in time). The kids are basically anchors to stabilise Vecna’s plan (or rather the Mind Flayer’s).

They are a discrete holographic boundary = boundary of a lower-dimensional system that encloses a higher dimensional system. 

What is going on with Will is completely different: he was taken directly to the UD (our WBG) not the Abyss) and not only exposed to the particles in there, he also died in the UD. It’s like his mind is between two entanglement wedges, and that is why Vecna calls him a builder: he creates form, he has access to space. 

That is why he can sense things and why he works like an “antenna”: his powers are “innate” in the sense that he became part of the 11D, which is why he’s able to enter Henry’s mind → he has access to the high-dimensional structure Henry is part of (and his memories in Camazotz).

It’s like Will isn’t fully part of the 3D world, he’s part of the whole 11D system, this means that he’s not fully part of the same spacetime the others are part of = the reason why they’re forgetting things like his birthday. 

The Abyss we already said is a projection - to make our party believe they are fighting and defeating the real Mind Flayer (this is why nobody died even if they should have, like Steve who was already out of reach when Jonathan gripped his hand) → this is why we don’t see them getting out, because they entered a low-entropy replica in spacetime. 

And that is exactly what we see in the epilogue → when they exploded the exotic matter/the lab, they entered a “shadow” of Hawkins, where everything works for the observers’ comfort (the characters).

But everything already started when Nancy shot the exotic matter → the destabilization made the wormhole lose timelike structure and memory/reality collided and re-wired themselves → the entanglement islands start overlapping and with them the memories in Henry’s memory pocket (Will coming out speech = him feeling emotions that aren’t fully his own) bleed into “Hawkins”: 60s songs/clothes, etc. 

And this is also why in the epilogue everyone is behaving weirdly (they are basically compressed versions of themselves in a low-entropy shadowed Hawkins) and objects keep coming back (clothes from s1/2, Jonathan’s ring being the one Hopper uses,etc).

So how do they fix this? How do they “go back” to the “future” (real) Hawkins? 

They basically need to force a Page transition (in physics terms) by triggering the entanglement island. They have to make the universe remember and overload (remember how waves can travel through spacetime wormholes?) by overcharging it with everything that doesn’t belong in that reality because it isn’t coded in its essence. 

They need to synchronize walkies, clocks, music, radios and broadcast signals from many different locations and they have to recall shared memories from the real Hawkins → creating a conflict with how “fake Hawkins” expects them to behave - like saying things they never said, or telling the truth → that is why the white goo stopped when Nancy and Jonathan told the truth to each other, they basically stopped time. 

Those exit signs aren’t there because they will get out by crossing a physical door, they will force a door to open by overloading the signal and making the fake system collapse.

How does this relate to everything I explained in the other post? Well, everything Maxwell and Henderson worked on (waves and electromagnetism) brings us to atomic clocks -> think of a pendulum in a grandfather's clock: oscillatory frequency brings atomic vibrations that make the system keep track of time (to simplify the concept). Vecna's clock wasn't just there for decor, it was an atomic clock. Also Maxwell's equations explain how waves can physically propagate through space as electromagnetic radiation (music = sound waves).

All of this is connected to Planck's constant: h = energy carried by a photon with the frequency of its electromagnetic wave. In M-Theory it describes how quantum mechanics unify with gravity. But Maxwell's equations can't explain quantum entanglement, which is demonstrated by Bell's test (remember how in Netflix's videos Caleb read a letter from Isabelle (is a bell) and how it was Lucas to tell us not to believe in coincidences, to remind us of what day it was and that nothing made sense). I'll try to explain this concept.

Quantum entanglement = two particles (like electrons) are linked and you can't explain one without the other: electrons have a property called "spin" and it is either "up" or "down", you get one or the other. Bell tested what Einstein called hidden variables (properties pre-determined) and the results showed that reality isn't locally pre-determined. If you apply Planck's constant to spin you get that up and down share a quantum phase, if they (up and down) interact they get entangled on a quantum level.

So what does bell test do if you apply it to a larger scale? It checks if things respect local realism, like things being where they are, etc -> Lucas is our bell test.

Now, what did J. Clarke do? His work had to do with quantum tunnels: particles have a wavefunction that lets them pass through a barrier (this wouldn't be possible in classical physics). Will was building tunnels with his mind, connecting the UD to Hawkins: he was literally tunneling through reality, applying quantum tunnels to a macroscale.

This is only possible in higher-dimensional universes, which are allowed in M-Theory (remember we said 11D and branes). The tunnels are a shortcut through dimensions.

In M-Theory wormholes at the Planck scale can be dual to entanglement: entanglement = tiny wormholes that connect particles in higher dimensions.

In the other post I talked about black holes relating to the wormhole, and I mentioned Hawking's radiation. This process is actually described as quantum tunneling as well: in quantum mechanics the particles can escape black holes by breaking the barrier at event horizon and becoming Hawking's radiation.

Now, if we think up and down are quantum entangled and we know that the UD is inside the wormhole, we can say that the UD is indeed a Wheeler's bag of gold (like I said in the other post, where I also explain what WBG are).

But how can it be frozen in time(1983)? Time depends on gravity and spacetime curvature and the inside of a wormhole has an extreme curve, this means extreme time dilation. If Will's state got entangled with the quantum state then the UD's wavefunction got "locked" into Will's state. And if we think of memories and such things as information, then Will becoming entangled on a quantum level with Dimension X or the WBG inside the wormhole means that his information could have been partially removed from the "normal" timeline (or, the others forgetting things about him or Will not being in multiple shots).

If we think the Abyss wasn't real and that they actually didn't kill Vecna and it was a sort of "illusion", we can explain it by saying that the Abyss was a projection of the quantum state (or a pocket, like Camazotz). It felt real because the characters were interacting with it (entanglement) but it doesn't actually affect the Mind Flayer or Dimension X -> it's like Schrodinger's cat: we have a local definite result, but if the cat is entangled elsewhere the whole system is unchanged. This is also why we don't see them getting out of the Abyss but we see them in a "fake" reality/Hawkins.

Then they explode the exotic matter -> the wormhole collapses but the quantum state (since we are in a 11D m-theory system) exists, just with incomplete information: this is exactly when an island forms (I talk about them in the other post). It's a quantum island that forms (or is forced by Vecna?) to preserve the information after the collapse. You can also see it as a brane-localized spacetime. But what matters is that it has the lowest possible energy to store the information and that is why everyone is behaving weirdly, it's like they're compressed versions of themselves.

Introduction

In this paper, the MZLC protocol (Multi-Z-Line Control) is introduced to identify and resolve magnetic flux crosstalk in superconducting quantum processors. Flux control lines can unintentionally modify nearby qubit and coupler frequencies in complex multi-qubit systems, reducing gate fidelity and calibration precision.

By mapping interactions and employing a cancelation matrix, the authors reduce crosstalk from over 50 to virtually zero statistical error. Even with modest signal quality and poor readout equipment, this strategy scales quantum technology well. The study shows that decreasing these errors makes two-qubit gate operations more predictable, making larger, more durable quantum computers easier to build.

Challenge of “Quantum Cross-Talk”

Quantum computers' superconducting qubits compute with precise magnetic control. To construct fault-tolerant quantum computing, scientists must connect hundreds or thousands of qubits. “Flux crosstalk plays a role in a frequency-tunable qubit-coupler system; it obscures the precise frequency detuning required for a quantum gate operation,” the researchers said. Magnetic flux crosstalk increases with qubit density and Z-line density.

When a signal is sent to tune one qubit, the magnetic field leaks into surrounding qubits or couplers, causing unwanted frequency changes. As the system grows, this interference affects gate performance and makes proper calibration nearly impossible.

New standard: Multi-Z-Line Control

The study team, coordinated by Chung-Ting Ke and Myrron Albert Callera Aguila, developed Multi-Z-Line Control to describe and suppress this interference. MZLC uses residual inductive coupling between parts, unlike prior methods that required complex, specialized circuitry for each component.

Innovative characteristics of the study include Indirect Coupler Spectroscopy (ICS). “Tunable couplers” manage qubit interactions in a conventional quantum device. These couplers require driving lines and readout resonators, which take up chip space. The team's ICS technique avoids this by exploiting the coupler's weak capacitive coupling to nearby qubit driving lines. By letting researchers “see” what the coupler is doing without wire, the chip architecture becomes more scalable and compact.

From 56.5 to Zero: Precision Masterclass

The MZLC technique yields remarkable results. Researchers assessed average flux crosstalk levels before applying their proposed rectification methods. By establishing a cancelation matrix, a mathematical map that tells the system how to “counter-act” leakage, they reduced Z-line crosstalk from 56.5 to 0.13.

This considerable drop makes the remaining crosstalk practically statistical error. This accuracy ensures flux pulses, which regulate qubit frequency, become “decoupled, uniform, and reciprocal”.

Quantum Gates' “Digital Twin”

The MZLC protocol makes quantum gate operation more intuitive than noise dampening. These methods allowed researchers to develop a “digital twin” of the coupler-mediated conditional-phase (CZ) gate.

Complex quantum computing methods require a two-qubit CZ gate. By performing flux correction, the scientists created a perfectly symmetric map of CZ gate data. Researchers may accurately predict the gate's behavior and identify non-idealities such flux transients and undesirable mode hybridization using this digital twin.

The paper states that “Flux crosstalk compensation creates a magnetic flux crosstalk-free intuitive digital twin of the coupler-mediated CZ gate,” thus hundreds of qubit computers can optimize operations.

Effect on Future Computing

This discovery has far-reaching effects outside the lab. A “simple, scalable, robust, and low-overhead tool,” the MZLC protocol overcomes one of the primary engineering “bottlenecks” for superconducting computers of the size. Quantum computers will be able to solve problems that ordinary supercomputers cannot by maintaining high-fidelity gates as control lines increase.

Academia Sinica, National Taiwan University, Feng-Chia University, and National Changhua University of Education materials science, electrical engineering, and physics experts collaborated on the project. The Taiwanese National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and National Quantum Initiative funded the research, showing the region's commitment to leading computing technology.

Overview

This study describes the creation of a high-dimensional quantum gate for complex photon interactions. Instead of binary qubits, this innovation uses qudits, which occupy several states to boost computational power and efficiency. The researchers created a four-dimensional controlled phase-flip gate by encoding information in light's orbital angular momentum.

To ensure system stability and overcome photon suppression, the researchers developed a high-precision phase-locking method. This breakthrough replaces several traditional gates with a single, multidimensional operation, advancing optical quantum networks. In conclusion, the experiment reveals how to scale up information processing beyond dual-state systems.

Researcher Unveils First High-Dimensional Photon Heralded Gate

A multinational collaboration of scientists has established a novel quantum gate that allows high-dimensional photons to interact without destroying them, advancing the construction of a high-capacity “quantum internet.” Nanjing University, the Technical University of Vienna, and the National Research Council of Canada led the study, which presented a “heralded” high-dimensional (HD) controlled phase-flip (CPF) gate for secure communication networks and quantum computers.

Beyond the Qubit: Qudit Power

The qubit, a two-dimensional gadget that may represent 0 or 1, has been the foundation of quantum computing for years. However, researchers are increasingly interested in qudits, multidimensional quantum systems. High-dimensional encoding boosts processing power and quantum communication security by encoding more information in a single particle.

As quantum systems become more complex, they require an astonishing number of “entangling gates” to operate. The team's approach addresses this issue. Researchers used four-dimensional qudits to show that a single high-dimensional gate could perform the tasks of at least thirteen two-qubit entangling gates. Quantum devices are more effective and error-free due to their simplicity.

A “Heralding” Development

One of the main challenges in optical quantum computing is that photons, light particles, do not naturally interact. Measurements of photons are needed to verify quantum operations, which destroy their quantum information.

Researchers used heralding to fix this. Auxiliary photons are detected separately to alert the gate operator that the gate operation was successful, eliminating the need to measure primary photons. Due to non-destructive feedback, photons must pass through a quantum circuit to build scalable quantum computers.

Twisted Light: OAM

Light's Orbital Angular Momentum encoded data in the experiment. OAM describes a light beam's wavefront "twist". Light can bend in infinite directions, making OAM a natural and stable substrate for high-dimensional qudits.

The researchers described their four-dimensional states using OAM modes -2, -1, 0, and +1. The researchers created an enhanced “OAM beam splitter” with linear-optical components like Ok-CNOT gates, which correlate photon twist and polarization, to regulate these modes.

Stability Innovation: Active Phase-Locking

This experiment struggled to maintain quantum interference precision. Even little temperature changes that change photon phase can malfunction the gate.

The authors developed a new active high-precision phase-locking approach to avoid this. Researchers stabilized their interferometers for over three hours using an electro-optic modulator (EOM) to modulate a “locking laser”. Unheard of for OAM-based systems, this steadiness was the gate's “key to the successful operation”.

Experimental Results and Future Implications

Researchers evaluated the gate's performance using process fidelity, which measures how well the experimental gate matches the theoretical ideal. Their fidelity range of 0.64 to 0.82 is much beyond the 0.5 threshold needed to prove the gate can induce quantum entanglement.

The experiment also showed how the gate can “entangle” two photons, making them inextricably linked regardless of distance. The gate produced an entangled output with 0.59 fidelity when the researchers entered a superposition state.

Integrating Photonic Architectures

The University of Osaka created a revolutionary integrated photonic architecture to replace massive, manually aligned optical systems with compact, mass-producible devices, advancing quantum technology's scalability. Alto Osada and Koichiro Miyanishi's approach addresses one of the main challenges to building usable quantum computers: accurately distributing many laser wavelengths to dozens of quantum processing locations.

The Table-to-Chip Scaling Challenge

The trapped-ion system has long been the most promising quantum computer solution. These devices use qubits, quantum information units, made of atoms suspended in a vacuum. However, many laser beams, from near-ultraviolet to near-infrared, are needed to regulate these ions. Traditional free-space optics delivery of these lasers required a delicate forest of mirrors, lenses, and mounts that filled lab tables.

Quantum node mass production is incompatible with the current method. Integrated photonics, which integrates nanometer-scale optical components into a centimeter-scale semiconductor, is the researchers' approach. This allows control of lasers fed via optical fibers, providing reproducibility and “intra-node scaling up”.

QCD and Laser Management

The proposed architecture supports QCCD. In this theory, ions are “shuttled” between trapping zones on the device. Each zone requires state initialization, measurement, or quantum gate execution for the ion. Nanophotonic waveguides implanted beneath the trapping electrodes must correctly supply a specific set of lasers for each activity.

Researchers encounter a logistical challenge: if each trapping zone (n) requires a unique laser color combination (m), the number of optical fibers needed to connect to the device becomes unsustainable (m×n). A chip with ten zones and six laser colors requires 60 fibers in a tiny device. The authors propose a “split-and-rearrangement” component in photonic circuits to feed a m×n network of waveguides using just m fibers.

Comparison: Bubble Sort vs. Blockwise Duplication

The latest research focuses on dividing and reconfiguring waveguides on-chip. Sources describe Bubble Sort and Blockwise Duplication as two basic methods.

Bubble Sort Method separates each input waveguide into n copies to generate a big bundle of identically colored waveguides that are “sorted” across the chip in the desired order. This method is simple, but it requires many waveguide crossings, which may cause power loss.

Blockwise Duplication Method: This more modular method combines the m laser colors into a single “block” and then replicates it throughout the chip. This method dramatically reduces waveguide crossings, making it useful.

Blockwise Duplication is frequently preferable with realistic optical loss estimates like 0.1 dB for splitters and 0.22 for crossings, according to the study. Adding wavelengths and zones improves power transfer and reduces circuit size.

Strontium Ion Case Study

Osada and Miyanishi applied their architecture to strontium ions (Sr+) to demonstrate its applicability. Strontium must be controlled by six laser wavelengths: 422 nm, 1092 nm, 674 nm, and 1033 nm for cooling and quantum processes, and 405 and 461 for photoionization.

Photoionization lasers are only needed in some "loading zones," but all trapping zones need four. The suggested design helps manage laser groups. The 674 nm laser, which needs higher power for high-speed quantum gates, can be routed with minimal crossings to reduce power deterioration. Only the integrated strategy in the study permits this level of specialized optical routing.

Extended Horizons and Future Design

This work affects more than quantum computing. These multi-wavelength integrated designs can help biochemical sensors and optoelectronic devices, they say. Sensors that use many laser wavelengths to detect chemical markers could use the same compact, split-and-rearrange electronics.

The blockwise duplication strategy works, although the researchers notice problems. For instance, they are studying intermediary methods that could boost power efficiency. Waveguide-free circuits were also covered. These “crossing-less” designs are often impractical because they require extremely long waveguides with high propagation loss, especially at ion trapping's lower ultraviolet wavelengths.

A Magic State Distillation

A Novel Quantum Algorithm Enables Measurement-Free Magic State Distillation for Fault-Tolerant Computing

A new Magic State Distillation (MSD) solution without measurements or non-deterministic post-selection could simplify fault-tolerant quantum computer construction. Sascha Heußen of neQxt in Cologne, Germany, published the findings in APL Quantum on December 8, 2025.

Fixing Quantum Computing Noise

For quantum computers to be fully functional, qubits need universal quantum gate operations. Modern electronics are often too loud, so Quantum Error Correction (QEC) is needed to minimise noise randomly. No QEC code can have a universal set of inherently fault-tolerant (FT) gates. Different FT gate designs, usually using MSD, are needed.

MSD, a standard quantum approach, can generate a fault-tolerant universal quantum gate operation on error-corrected logical qubits. To perform a high-fidelity logical non-Clifford gate, resource quantum states, or “magic states,” are sequentially increased in fidelity and used in a gate-teleportation circuit.

Traditional MSD approaches include operator measurements and post-selection based on outcomes. This traditional reliance makes distillation non-deterministic with noise. The difficulty of real-time feed-forward measurements hinders quantum technology's practical use.

Coherent Feedback Suppresses Deterministic Noise

This new work provides a circuit implementation for the 15-to-1 MSD approach that overcomes these limits. Instead of measurements and post-selection, the protocol suppresses noise deterministically using a Coherent Feedback Network (CFN) on output states.

The technique uses QEC code unitary encoding and decoding circuits. This code is chosen because it has a transversal logical T-gate, can detect two arbitrary Pauli faults (with a distance d=3), and can fix one. Distillation maps 15 noisy input magic states to one output magic state (k=1).

The remaining 14 output qubits carry syndrome data. The CFN coherently rectifies syndrome information using a look-up table decoder. Unlike traditional non-deterministic systems, the MSD's conclusion remains valid. The CFN addresses only output message qubit errors that spread via the unitary decoding circuit.

Performance and Trade-offs

Noise suppression decreases each round without measurements or post-selection. The typical 15-to-1 MSD approach (a Class A scheme) suppresses from {O}(p) to {O}(p^3) with post-selection, while the deterministic measurement-free technique reduces suppression to {O}(p^2).
