Are machine learning and data science same?
Machine learning and data science are not the same. Machine learning is a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI). The goal of machine learning generally is to understand the structure of data and fit that data into models that can be understood and utilized by people.
Importance of Data Science
Data science is a "concept to unify statistics, data analysis, machine learning, and their related methods" in order to "understand and analyze actual phenomena" with data. It employs techniques and theories drawn from many fields within the context of mathematics, statistics, computer science, and information science. Wikipedia
Coming back to our question, yes! You need machine learning if you are a data scientist. Machine learning has got a subset of algorithms that can be used for various purposes.
Difference Between Data Science and Machine Learning
Data Science is an interdisciplinary field that requires a wide range of knowledge in maths, engineering, and IT. Machine Learning on the other hand is a subset of AI which focuses on teaching computers how to learn without being explicitly programmed. Machine Learning algorithms learn in three ways:
Supervised Learning: The algorithm is given a dataset that contains the right answers and these answers are used as a training model for the algorithm. Once trained, the algorithm can predict outcomes when new data is fed into it. E.g., Email Spam Detection, Image Recognition, etc.
Unsupervised Learning: Here the algorithm uses pattern recognition to identify hidden structures in unlabeled datasets. E.g., Anomaly detection, Association rule learning, etc.
Reinforcement Learning: The algorithm learns from its own experience based on trial-and-error or reward and punishment criteria. E.g., Gaming.
Portia and Qualdo by the talented @poroshoktaid
Bloop!
Qualdo lives in an abandoned, unfinished comms tower. He’s smuggled enough pillows and blankets out of the mattress shop to make furniture out of crates. Khojaw lent him a cooler to use as a fridge. He lives pretty comfortably up there. Portia swings by a lot to check up on him.

Next Line Tag Game!
You’ve heard of the Last Line tag. In this game, post the line that comes after your most recently written line before you write it in your WIP document. (Don’t sweat it that you’ll probably change it immediately after you post it.)
Here is the first line of the chapter of Du Doompa I am working on:
Qualdo hopped down from the barricade with a smirk. He was the same size as those Pengauani. He could sneak through the battlefield with an equal chance of being unnoticed.

Hondo and Qualdo by @mackpichu14
Khojaw has a big stack of durasheets and wax markers in the back that he lets Qualdo use. He puts the best ones on the side of the beverage cooler. Qualdo drew this quite recently. (He’s illiterate so he gets help with the names.)
