PSA on toewalking
Ok, I'm directing this at alterhumans, quadrobists and autistics, because the venn diagram between these three things is basically a circle.
I need you guys to know that if you walk on your tiptoes all day everyday, especially in childhood/adolescence, the back muscles in your legs can end up much shorter than they need to be. This means that any time you stand normally your legs will be in pain because your calves will be constantly tense and straining, and this can affect every other joint and muscle in your legs.
I'm chronically in pain and likely permanently disabled because my legs physically don't cope with standing or walking. I'm almost never fully comfortable, even when I'm lying down. I need to take anti inflammatory pills daily and wear medical insoles to function, and even then I'm in constant pain. Running, going long distances, and walking up stairs are all extremely difficult tasks with tedious consequences for me. I didn't even know until very recently that your average abled Joe can stand for more than an hour before he feels any discomfort. It's genuinely unfathomable to me because I'll be upright for maybe two minutes till I'll want to sit back down again. I toewalked nearly every day for all my life till I was medically advised to stop. There's an incredibly high chance that my disability was caused primarily by this.
You might be able to convince yourself you could handle being sore 24/7 but I'm gonna be real: pain is exhausting. It takes a huge toll on your mind and body even when you learn to tune it out. Most chronically ill people can't have the same energy or stamina as healthy folk. I have less time in the day than you because I spend so long lying down just trying to recover energy, regardless of how draining my mental health situation happens to be at the time.
Now I'm not saying it's guaranteed you'll become permanently mobility impaired (I was already hypermobile and I've personally got an inconsistent relationship with fitness anyway) but it's damn likely. If you do quadrobics, if you toewalk for the leg euphoria, even if you're just in it for the love of the game, for God's sake get yourself acquainted with calf and ankle stretches. Before I was medicated there was a decent period where I couldn't leave the house on my own. Even nowadays I struggle with travelling anywhere on foot. Don't let this happen to you if you can help it!
