Yeah the human metabolism is actually incredibly fascinating for that!! Once you start giving your body signals to gain weight it does so very easily and then holds onto that for survival. And then other people still struggle to gain weight. I've even seen theories out there that say your ancestors' access to food has a part to play into how you gain fat. For example, all Irish descended people with the potato famine (the great hunger) in their DNA will be more likely to be heavier to survive such conditions
