Today was the day, a day long awaited by a couple of friends- eagerly awaiting to leave the crumbling hometown of Hazlitt. Once a boisterous and lively place for all to reside, the arrival of the Miracles tainted it beyond saving; historical and iconic buildings reduced to common rubble and its people forced out or slaughtered by the Miramon. All wasn't lost, in the eyes of Q; a short Esper with feathery wings on the sides of his head to keep his body flying above the ground. Clutching onto a duffle bag relatively his size, he was quick to zip out of his hiding area and ducked behind broken structures, avoiding the rampantly furious Miramon whilst aiming to go to his planned spot; where he would regroup and escape with his childhood friend Joe. Such a travel was already terrifying, but the thought of escape kept the little Esper flying; maneuvering about from spot to spot before a familiar structure came into view. It was a simple field with a large statue in the middle, a once treasured place now devoid of livelihood and laughter.
Flying out towards the field, Q landed at the base of the statue on its podium; clinging to the statue as he began scanning around the field for any possible sign of his friend. "Come on, come onnn… Joe where are you??" He muttered worryingly, pacing around the statue in his midst of his anxiety-fueled desperation. A minute felt like a lifetime in this search, his heart hammering in his chest before a glimpse of a figure nearby caught his attention, making him audibly sigh in relief. "Finally! What took you so long?!" Q hissed as he flew over to Joe, circling him before hovering close to hug him tightly. Joe sighed and brushed a lock of his blonde hair out of his eyes, his violet irises dark and cloudy, rendering his emotions difficult to read whilst he mumbled his words. "Yeah, I kinda overslept…" Considering the many things they went through together throughout the years, Q could tell right away that something was amiss. For now, leaving Hazlitt remained the top priority, evident by the shorter Esper grabbing onto the sleeve of Joe's jacket and pulling him in the direction of the temporary safezone. "Come on, the cops got a shuttle ready at the station for the rest of us. We should-" The resistance that met his pulling cut off his words, forcing Q to look over at Joe, his eyebrows raising lightly in confusion. "Joe?…C'mon. The shuttle leaves soon-" "I can't go with you."
In the moments those words left Joe's mouth, it seemed an anvil weighed itself down on Q's heart, leaving him agape and struggling to find the words to ask why. Sadly for him, Joe seemed ready to explain it, his eyes hazing in sorrow as he lifted his head to meet his shorter friend's look of shock. "I can't go. I'm going to stay- to help out where I can and see who else is still alive." Q's wings fluttered as he descended down to the grass, turning his back on Joe for the moment. Sensing his friend's shock, Joe paused to let him process his words before he continued. "I've got some first-aid responders waiting near the apartments in the more empty parts of Hazlitt. If you want- maybe-" He reached a hand out slowly to Q's shoulder, hoping to console him. "-Maybe you can come with and-" His hand was then smacked away by Q's smaller one, the shorter Esper finally turning around to face Joe with a mournful look in his eyes. "Why?"
"Why what?"
"Why didn't you tell me any of this?! The amount of time we spent, risking our lives, facing death every waking moment here in Hazlitt- AND YOU WISH TO STAY?!" Q's more sharper canines showed itself as he raised his voice in mixed feelings of anguish and frustration. It broke Joe's to see his friend like this; but he had to stand by his decision, regardless of the tears Q were shedding. "I couldn't, Q, you would've talked me out of it!" "And you think that's a BAD thing?! I wouldn't want you to stay and risk your life, while we both have a chance to leave!" "That's the point; Q!" Joe blurted out, making Q fall into silence for a short while. "You are thinking of yourself again! Yes- I would like to leave, but unlike you, I have a responsibility here! I have to help these people make it out alive. I understand that you can't, with the way your body is-" "What is THAT supposed to mean?!"
Joe sucked in a breath, realizing the unintentional assumption over his Esper friend and shortly began to stammer on his words, trying to help him understand. "You are an Esper, yes, but physically you have a disadvantage. When a person needs medical attention- how would you explain being able to handle a situation like that?!" Q froze in his spot, a glare in his eyes as he looked at Joe, unable to really get a grasp on what this meant for them. "So- what? You expect me to leave Hazlitt without you? I can't do that." "But you can't force me to leave, Q." His eyes widened slightly as it dawned on him- Joe was not giving him any spots to argue against his decision. They were going to have to split. His breaths quickened slightly as the reality of the situation bore its ugly head to him, staking him through the heart; his voice cracking lightly. Hoping to get through to Joe, Q took a step closer to his friend, his chest heaving as he fought the tears that were threatening to spill from him.
"Joe…please. You can fight to protect another day, please come to the shuttle with me. Let's leave Hazlitt and enjoy life a little before I possibly lose you to the Miracles. Please, Joe-" "I am not yours to lose. We've been friends for years, but that won't stop me from doing what is right." Joe's eyes met Q's in a shared look of sorrow, just as Joe uttered out his last words; his once kind violet eyes now steeled with the weight of his choice.
"I was never yours to lose. Good Luck, Q- you're on your own this time."
Q's tears rolled down his cheeks whilst he choked on a sob, slowly turning away from Joe until his back faced his friend; his wings spanning out and trembling before flapping downwards, the resistance against his feathers lifting him from the ground and away from Joe. He didn't even bother to turn around or hide, flying straight to the safe zone as he could feel Joe's presence sifting away the farther he flew. Landing near the shuttle, an officer with a reflective vest walked over to Q; raising an eyebrow at the Esper. "Anyone else joinin' you, kid?" Usually he'd be up in arms over being called 'Kid', but this time; like everything else today- it just wasn't the same. Shaking his head in reply, Q waited for the officer to move him along before he climbed into the shuttle. Passing by other citizens, varying in physical states of health, he could only glance at them blankly; the worried murmurs and light squealing of other riders registering as mere static to his ears before he found a lone spot and took his seat. Looking out of the window, a small part of him wished Joe would show up, wished he would've tossed his heroism aside just to be with him one day more, just to come and say he made a mistake; but the rumbling of the bus starting up and the doors shutting sealed the decision. Turning away from the window, Q brought his knees up to his chest and did his best to stifle his sobs, hoping the Miramon would ambush and wipe them all out; just so he wouldn't have to live with this gut-wrenching pain any longer.
