Nothing frustrates me more than getting into am argument with my dad about the lgbt community, something he knows literally nothing about, and us arguing over "q***r" being a slur or not.
And his main counterpoint is back in the 1960's there were people using it as a "pro word." Unfortunately, that argument holds little to no ground because what else came from that era?
Rocky Horror Picture Show. Which is a God awful film about someone who rapes two people and makes the third one their sex slave. And for SOME REASON it keeps being put as this "pro lgbt" thing when it clearly isn't.
And then you have the people who have q***r screamed at them as well as other slew of slur words while getting beaten or outright KILLED. So if anything he's telling me that the lgbt community in the 1960's was extremely problematic.
Just like how you wouldn't be walking around calling people the N word because it was in MLKJR'S speech that one time. Unfortunately the q slur isn't treated the same way as it should be.
Saying any vulgar word in public is gonna get you funny looks, you're gonna be asked to leave, and people will laugh at you if you try to defend yourself.
And don't even get me started on my fucking cousin who's like "the gays stole the rainbow" and oh GOD SHUT THE FUCK UP! You have zero clue as to what you're talking about.
Using q***r as an "umbrella term" is not only wrong it's dumb. We already HAVE an umbrella term:
LGBTQIAPN (the Q stands for "Questioning")
Sure it's a sloppy mess. But the mess is inclusive unlike the slur that kids are bullshiting themselves into thinking "it's OK now"
Now if you yourself identify as that, I couldn't give two shits about that. But unfortunately that isn't the problem.
If you feel so inclined to call yourself that I don't care, but if you use that as an umbrella term against people who don't want to be called it and have had to deal with ignorant assholes who can't tell the difference than you can go eat a dick for all I care.
