My Grandmother's Purple Iris (now in my garden).

Subterranean Violet - Iris Study in Acrylic

An intimate study of floral anatomy, capturing the dense architectural veins of an Iris blossom.

This piece balances rich gradients of violet, magenta, and deep purple acrylic washes on paper, contained by heavy, organic ink linework that maps the delicate petals.

There is a little story behind this purple iris- when i was a kid my grandparents house was a magical place and my grandfather had this beautiful garden tucked at the back of the property filled with flowers, but mainly purple irises - when they were old and the property was sold the bulbs were dug up and distributed among their children and eventually grandchildren. When i finally moved out of the city, I was folded into the tradition- all these years later they still bloom every year!
