One Year Studying Geometry

One year ago I finished this drawing of this Cordoba Synagogue pattern by following these step by step instructions I found online. It was a very important barrier to break as an artist.  This drawing did not come easily.  I remember struggling to line up the grid correctly and avoid mistakes.  However, I was very satisfied with how it turned out.  It made me realize that the potential of geometric design using such simple tools was limitless. It also made me believe in myself.  I have wanted to get into geometric artwork for years prior to this.  But I had always dismissed it as too difficult to grasp or beyond my ability.  This drawing was proof otherwise. Since then I have learned so much, and I am looking forward to many more years of making progress and creating. 🌠

Approaching Infinity

My largest piece so far (14 x 17 inches) pen and ink.

This hand drawn design features 3 layers of seamless tessellated patterns.  The design is a bit bigger than this photograph, but I wanted to capture the ‘endless’ feeling it gives you when focusing on the center.

I lost count of how many hours were clocked on this, but If I had to guess, close to 48.

Patience and Progress

This is a 6 month checkpoint on the progress I’ve made so far working on geometric design and dotwork.

The left design was drawn in September, and is probably my very first attempt at dotwork.  I recall being unable to evenly space out my dots on the lines and plan ahead for where my dots would end.  I was also a lot more impatient at the time.  I placed a lot more attention on finishing the piece than working in the moment.

Many many many hours of practice has taught me to focus on what is at hand at the moment, be patient and do not concern yourself with finishing.  Give all your attention to the part you are working on, then move onto the next.  Don’t rush things and the quality will be seen in the results.

Sunday Stars

I’ve been going through a bit of a creative drought lately, shifting my attention from project to project, not really honing in on one in particular.  I’ve finally been able to focus long enough on one piece to finish.

★ Black Hex Geometric Flash Designs ★

As promised here are the designs worked on last weekend!  I added a space and halftone effect with dotwork in the background of each design.  Definitely a test in patience getting these just right.

I eventually would like to get into tattooing, and will likely be buying a gun this year to start practicing on myself.  That being said, I feel as though my designs are starting to look tattooable.  If anyone is interested in purchasing these flash designs or commissioning a piece, please feel free to contact me!

Weekend Work In Progress...

I am painfully close to finishing the drawings I previewed  here ahead of the long weekend.

I picked up an LED light pad on Amazon for $25 and I’m quite pleased with the results already!  It allows me to print off patterns I design in Illustrator and transfer them to paper, I can also scale things to a much smaller more detailed level.

This is an old design that I had saved on my computer.  Not sure when it was created, but its a 6-way reflection of a tessellated cubes pattern.  So naturally I added some layers of tessellated cubes with dotwork (lines and filled) and gradient to give it some motion.  This took the entire weekend, and my neck is killing me, but I’m quite pleased to have it finished. 

Final Stretch from Inktober 2017

This was the last completed design from Inktober last year.  Full page covered, and feeling good about the progress made in a month.

Back to the drawing board this weekend!
