This photo popped up in my Facebook memories today, and as a perfectly rational adult with a good handle on my emotions, I promptly burst into tears upon seeing it.
Four years ago, to this very day, we met the puppy that was matched for us. He was a floppy, mellow little chonk and wasn’t cut out to be a show dog because, I kid you not, he was apparently TOO laid back. We waited two years for a puppy and during that time, had jokingly used a codename “Drewbert” as a placeholder until we can pick a “real” name. By the time we saw him, we had already been calling him Drewbert for two years and the rest was history.
Little did I know this giant potato of a puppy would settle into my world and become my heart dog. He is the “raison d'être” for all of this: for this account, for me getting back into photography as a hobby, for Mona joining our family three years later.
He is without a doubt the best puppy we could have asked for as first time dog owners. He has a quiet sort of presence, prefers to hang back instead of being in the limelight, is independent and doesn’t like to cuddle. But wherever I go, he’s never far behind. I wish I could go back in time to 4 years ago and squeeze this floof and tell him he’s going to grow up to be the best boy ever.
