In Māori mythology, Punga is the ancestor of sharks, rays, lizards and all distorted, ugly things. It is said that all deformed things are Punga's children, hence the expression "Te aitanga a Punga" (the offspring of Punga) sometimes being used to describe a physically unattractive person.
Punga is the son of Tangaroa, the god of the sea. He also has two sons himself, Ikatere and Tū-te-wehiwehi, who are the ancestors of certain fish and lizards respectively.

In the latest flower garden news the caterpillars are still munching. The rain is still falling and the garden is looking a little empty. We have had a good clear out and are in the process of removing a couple of trees. One just randomly started to die. We pruned off the dead branches and fed and pampered it but it just ended up a very odd shape and was not thriving so out it came. The other was a shrub close to the house which was just too close and getting too big. That one is still in the process of being removed. So work to do and plants to plant and a long weekend coming up.
