Training camp wrap up
So the studio’s annual training camp was over the weekend, and it was so fun! I’m feeling fresh, re-energized, and inspired again. I’ve been feeling a little burned out about going to the studio to teach and train, so camp was just what I needed.
Camp was three days long and consisted of about 20 hours of training in total. Every morning began with Pukulan workouts, focusing on basics from each animal influence. Then during the afternoon we cross trained and worked on a different disciple that is currently taught at the studio, or used to be.
Day one we got to practice Eskrima with Datu, it was great having him back to teach. His focus was disarms, both stick to stick, and stick to empty hand. He also did some joint locks, I am getting smoother with them.
Day two was Northern Shaolin. Sifu taught the first three lines of Tan Tui, I got some good reminders on basics. We did lots of forearm conditioning and application of techniques from lines 1-3. I was Sifu’s punching bag for that training, dude is inhuman. Hurts to hit him and hurts even more to get hit by him. Although I think I’m getting better/tougher because I actually left some red on him after forearm conditioning and he went a little harder than usual.
Day three headmaster brought back an instructor that hadn’t been teaching at the studio for a while, and someone I never trained with. He specializes in Silambam (An Indian style with focus on staff.) and Malaysian Silat. We briefly did some basic twirls from the Silambam form, which just felt like basic flowers from the Shaolin weapon forms. The bread and butter of his teaching was learning to use a Sarong as a defensive weapon and that was probably my favorite part of camp.
How’s training going for the rest of y’all Budoblr?
