I think what makes the sea a horror isn't the unknowable depths- because we often don't perceive the depth. It's the line on the horizon stretching 360 degrees around your person, and the movement of the waves that show a motion unending and undefined.

Alternatively, they are different types of horror and the sea encompasses both; but I think the sea is much more Eldritch than we give it credit for.

#Sunless Sea soundtrack doesn't help as I stare out the windows lol. Usually I use Skies when I write but Spotify is glitching.#Offhandedly proposing that the way to counter Eldritch horror is mathematical. Light and the cosmos are both wave functions.#But we counter something like depth (that we can't inherently see/perceive) via exploration #which is a different type/style of horror. You can /find/ the Eldritch under the sea but it is not inherently Eldritch.#ptxt #Edit: Building on that; Annihilation is the best of both worlds. What are we going to find? and What we have found is unending and horrific #to our human perception.
