The Pitt was in more of a hurry than usual, that was clear with the amount of people running around and the busy noise of everything occurring. You were by Jack’s side as the two of you made way through the crowd. Jack had asked for a little help to bring in some supplies today as you were carrying two bags in either hand.
“Dr. Abbot you’re needed right away!” It was a shout from someone that you couldn’t make out in the sea of faces.
Jack got slightly tense straightening up at the statement before giving you an apologetic side look. You smile at him already knowing that he’d be disappearing into the crowd soon enough leaving you to drop off his items in his locker. You two had been together for long enough that you knew the combination to the large storage container and exactly which one it was.
“Go on love I’ve got this.” You told him calmly.
“I’ll text you if I run over hours. Love you.” Jack responded dipping down at the end to give you a quick kiss before disappearing as you had predicted.
You continued to walk deeper till your eyes caught Dana’s and she immediately started walking to you. It was only a few paces before she was right in front of you.
“Dana hon, you free?”
“Depends on what you need there.” Dana playfully delivered.
You let out a little laugh between the two of you before picking up the bags slightly to showcase the situation, “Got some stuff to put in Jack’s locker.”
She gives a knowing look and motions you to follow her. Walking in silence you finally made it to the back staff room that held the lockers. Thankfully no one else was in there as you lightly dropped the bags giving a slight pained sigh at the weight finally being off your shoulders. It didn’t take you long to stack the bags in his locker and softly shut the metallic door.
“Hey sweetie there’s something I wanted to ask of you.” Dana breaks the silence.
“Sure what is it?” You ask straightening back up from the task you’d just finished.
“I know you don’t do it and I was going to ask Jack but he ya know.” She was dragging on as if she didn’t want to actually have to ask you whatever she needed.
“Dana?” You pressed softly in a low tone.
She looked like she was about to cry when her head shifted to the side to take a few seconds. Taking a shaky breath she looked back to you giving a straightforward answer, “It’s Robby. He seemed worse today and I’ve got this feeling he’s gonna do something.”
You shook your head in understanding. Remembering what Jack had told you about Robby’s roof visits you already knew that’s where he’d be.
“ I’ll go talk to him. Thank you for tellin me hon.” You told her making sure to keep your voice steady even as your body vibrated with anxiety.
Dana offered you a softer look thanking you before walking out of the room. You took a few shaky breaths in the empty space that echoed around you before you finally followed out. It wasn’t hard to find the stairwell and slip inside before anyone suspected a thing. On your way to the rooftop you mauled over how you’d go about this conversation. Talking a suicidal man back from the edge is already hard enough but being a suicidal man yourself just adds insult to injury.
Reaching the top of the stairs you glare at the heavy metal door, the last obstacle between you and the second man you’ve found a reason to stay for. A small sigh and you’re reaching out steadily pushing open the roof access. The first thing you’re met with is the cold snap in the air difference. The next is the only other soul on this roof and as you expected he was standing on the dangerous side of the railing.
Slipping past the door you walked over to him slowly as you stuffed your hands in your sweatpants. As you got closer you also noticed the stethoscope dangling from the top metal bar and as your eyes settled on it your chest clenched a little bit tighter at the gravity of the situation. Finally you reached the railing and called out to the man now slightly in front of you to your right, “ Hey Mikey.”
Robby continued to look out into the distance but answered regardless, “Hey.”
Getting an absolutely insane idea you ducked down and weaved your way under the top bar and through the railing joining him on the dangerous side. This caught Robby’s attention as his body shifted in your direction as you straightened back up. You looked over the edge slightly before backing up against the railing again.
“Quite the view right?” Robby quipped up.
You let out a small chuckle, “Oh for sure, I’m just not too keen on heights. More of a water guy myself.”
Robby gives a sympathetic smile knowing the deeper meaning to that detail you gave up. A calming silence washes over the two of you as you look out on the skyline. In the corner of your vision you see Robby start to slowly back himself away from the edge to the point of joining you leaning against the railing.
After a few more minutes you speak up, “You wanna talk about it?”
Robby looks down in response, answering, “Not much to talk about. Just a rough shift. Not sure if it was worth it.”
The confession has your chest tightening again. Concentrating on the feeling to ground your in your response, “It is, worth it that is. Even if it doesn’t feel like it. You do fucking amazing work, one of the best. You’re a really great doctor Mikey, even when you doubt it just know I see it. I see you.”
Robby let out a sharp breath and you could hear the slight sniffle he made. You looked over to him in that moment now being aware of the tears making their way down his face. Slowly you reached out for his face calling out to him, “Mikey, look at me.”
He shifted slightly to finally make eye contact with you.
You cupped his face gently with both hands as you spoke to him, “I see you hon.” He had started shaking slightly under you and continued to cry in your arms. You gently pressed kisses onto his cheeks removing the tears that streaked down until he had stopped crying. With one last sniffle from the older man you reluctantly pulled back from his face.
Robby’s eyes met yours again this time a bit more puffy and red in appearance. You smiled at him gently nonetheless and he returned the gesture.
“How bout we get off this roof?” You asked him delicately.
He simply gave you a nod of agreement to the proposal.
You carefully took your hands away from his face and ducked down under the railing. Resurfacing on the safe side of the metal bars to find Robby not far behind you.
Seeing the stethoscope still hanging you decided to grab it yourself, draping the tool around your own neck. Robby blinked a few times somewhere between shock and something more intimate he didn’t want to dwell on, not yet at least. You smiled at him reaching your hand out in an inviting manner to take it. He looked at it for a few seconds before slotting his fingers in yours.
The two of you walked downstairs hand in hand with comfortable silence. You were both at peace and even when you opened the door to the chaotic noise of the Pitt it hadn’t seemed to startle Robby like it usually did. Walking out was easier than walking in you had found as you dragged a willing Dr. Robinavitch behind you. It was like hell that you’d let the man drive his death machine home as you were fully planning on dragging him all the way to you and Jack’s shared truck.
Neither of you really paid mind to the looks you got leaving.
And you’d pay even less mind if you heard of some rumors that had started by tomorrow.
