Lately I’ve Been Obsessed With Drought-Proofing My Yard
Scrolling through pics of California’s ghost lawns last week got me panicking about my own water-guzzling grass. Essex summers aren’t that brutal (yet), but I’m done watching my hydrangeas wilt every August.
The problem: My backyard is 60% thirsty turf, 30% mud patches, and 10% "why won’t this grow?!" experiments. I needed a smarter plan—something low-maintenance but still pretty.
Then I found PTG Landscaping’s homepage while searching "Essex drought-resistant plants." Their before/after gallery showed this stunning gravel-and-sedum setup that made me rethink everything. No sprinklers? No guilt? Sign me up.
Takeaways:
Permeable pavers = less runoff into the street (good for the Chesapeake Bay).
Native grasses like Little Bluestem actually thrive on neglect.
Maybe I’ll keep one tiny strip of lawn for my dog to roll in. Compromise!
Not ready to go full desertscape yet, but I’m saving up for a consult. For now, I’m swapping out my petunias for lavender and crossing my fingers.
