Review: Urbex
Greetings again and salutations, gentle readers for it is time for another review. Today we will be covering Urbex, a hidden object game by developer Psionic Games and published by Armor Games. Urbex is a little different from our usual fair, as it is a browser game, but it was an interesting play through, so it made the list. Urbex. Urban Exploration, Incident #1, The first one. The one that takes place in an abandoned building. The one where you click things. The Game. Urbex puts you in the shoes of an Urban Explorer and Graffiti Photographer who has shown up at the behest of his favourite urban artist, āStingerā, to photograph some new wall art. Before we begin the game offers us a stern warning: āLEAVE NOTHING BUT FOOTPRINTS.....AND SPRAYPAINT ALL OVER THE WALLS.ā After a little exposition and the ādon't try this at homeā PSA, we start the game. I won't go into too much detail about the plot here, as it is incredibly straightforward. You go in, start taking pictures of your friend's handiwork.. creepy stuff starts happening and keeps happening all throughout the game as you are pulled deeper and deeper into the mysteries below a decaying building that appears to be a combination factory, train yard, and missile silo. Potential Nuclear Death! So Cool! The game's story wears a lot of hats, starting off with a creepy ghost-story vibe, and quickly switching to mad science, human hubris, and the creature feature that results from those having horrifying unethical science babies. āHi!ā The plot is a bit goofy, has plenty of holes and exactly zero surprises, but it's fun and fits in with the feel of the game, despite it being convoluted in the goofiest ways. Gameplay is as you would expect from a hidden object game, which, for the uninitiated, means that you click everywhere on a screen and if that doesn't uncover anything you use the items in your inventory and click them everywhere on the screen. There are puzzles to solve and plenty of secrets to find and it generally feels very hidden itemy. There are few places in the game where death is possible (and usually avoidable only after you have died several times and used those attempts to memorize a pattern of what to do.) and the game has a generally casual feel about it. But while the gameplay is simple and not too demanding, the atmosphere is actually pretty decent, with environments that are beautifully rendered. Though they will make you glad that Smell-o-Vision never caught on. There aren't a lot of visual effects in Urbex, as it is a game told mostly through stills the few bits that do show up are usually small little things in the background, often there and gone before you have the chance to really appreciate them. That monochrome Tandy computer, also gone before it could be appreciated. The sound design on the other hand is present in a big way. Metallic groans, peculiar buzzing noises, and macabre whispers permeate every screen. The good news is that they sound great. The bad news is they tend to be a little over-used and just sort of get old after a while. One can only listen to an ominous voice whisper that it wants to remove on's flesh for so long before it just becomes a bother. Well, I suppose not for this poor chap... Sound also comes into play in delivering a bit of exposition in the form of audio tapes which you can find and listen to, generally revealing parts of a conversation between two of the scientists working at the facility you have blundered into. You say ālab,ā I say āmodern art installation.ā The dialogue is of amateur quality and sounds like it was recorded on cheap equipment, but that actually works in it's favour as it is all supposedly recorded on a Dictaphone. Other items may be collected as well, including documents, photography opportunities, and even a running tally when the creatures from the game appear in the background and you manage to mouse over them. But not when they pose gangsta style. Straight outta Laboratory-C. These are all kept track of and are tallied up at the end of the game, similarly to the score system used by adventure games of yore. Or y'know, every arcade game. In conclusion, Urbex is a fun little time-waster. It's short on horror, suspense, and content. Had I not been battling with my screenshot program the entire time, I probably would have beaten this in about a half an hour. That said, it's a fun experience that is definitely not without it's faults, and the sound design might prickle a few hairs for some people before the whispering gets repetitive. All in all? Ok, probably not the weirdest.... Definitely not the weirdest. Here's the breakdown: Atmosphere: 5 Design: 5 Gameplay: 5 Sound: 6 Story: 4 TOTAL: 25/50 VERDICT: Average. Fun, but average. You can play Urbex for free on Armor Games. Bug cuddles! Disclaimer: The reviews on FEARLESS are purely the opinion of the author. No gratuity or compensation was given for this review.
