The Vow
Inspired by Curry College Communication Professor, Kirk Hazlett, I too needed to write my own love ode to Public Relations...
This love I had for PR started before I entered college. I held a PR position in student government in high school and won PR awards before I stepped foot on Syracuse University's campus. I walked and lived it and it was obvious I was in love. But I also yearned to make a change in society, so I took the easier road of wanting to become a lawyer; the road I thought would be more tangible. It was as if I was madly in love with a young man (PR) and only him and I could understand our love, but to others you would have to explain. So instead of explaining, I tried to channel my love for someone else (law/politics)...
So I entered Syracuse majoring in Political Science and African American Studies; two majors that I learned so much from and have been truly indebted to. But I also minored in Public Communications, practically living in Newhouse (Syracuse's Communication school) and this is when the love affair began....
On record, I was a poli sci and AAS student but my heart screamed public relations. So every chance I could outside of poli sci and AAS, I would partake in something with PR/communications. I held PR positions in student organizations; I conducted extensive research for my poli sci and AAS courses surrounding the media, music and communications... It was as if I was sneaking around just to be with the man of my dreams (PR).Â
Senior year came and I was still pushing my "love" for the law, to the point where I said I would be an entertainment lawyer. It was obvious I wanted to back down and go with my true love, but for some reason I just couldn't.
I took the LSATs, applied to over 14 law schools and was unhappy during the process, until... my biggest sign came along! Natasha Eubanks, Founder of TheYBF, came to Syracuse University in March and she woke me up! In March, I made the decision to not go to law school, follow my heart and give my all to my FIRST true love..
Since then I made a vow to channel my passions for music/Hip Hop, African American studies and community development into my love for public relations in order to create the shift in society, I so desperately want to see.
In all that you do, do it with love and the rest will follow!
twitter chats are so great.
We caught up with @ValerieSimon before a PRSA NY meeting to chat about #HAPPO, being a mom, and her changing career in Public Relations!
