Why do so many sanctuaries give gourds to their animals for enrichment? Is it just generally harmless and fun for a lot of animals?
They're edible, healthy veggies, and fun enrichment!
Would you rather have your chicken nuggies on a plain old plate or have to fish them out of a bag and box?
Even for animals that don't enjoy eating pumpkin, they have to play and interact with it to get the treats inside. October is awesome because now is when the pumpkins are ripe and also its great for the visitors enjoyment. Never underestimate festivities and guest enjoyment! A lot of education centers focus on family activities since not all adults are crazy zoo lovers like me they mostly go with families so having the animals also be as enthusiastic about Halloween is a great way to engage the kids who are passionate about halloween and trickortreating.
It's also just adorable AF!
Check out some of these awesome Zoo Halloween times!!!
Please someone carve a pumpkin and fill it with chicken nuggies for me please ok thanks
I just wanted to let you know that I'm unfollowing you, but I also want you to know why. I am pro-zoo. I love zoos: places of research, education, public outreach, and leaders in conservation worldwide. SeaWorld though? SeaWorld is not a zoo. It's a for-profit organization using animals for entertainment.
I’m sorry you feel that way, I hope you at least look back and look to see why I do support Seaworld. (I do appreciate that you are pro-zoo though!)
Seaworld is absolutely a place of research, education, public outreach, and leaders in conservation.
Right now, Seaworld is participating in research in developing ways of photographing orcas and creating a baseline of what healthy, well-fed orcas look like when photographed from above to compare with wild orcas. They are also participating in research in how nutrients and possibly toxins can be passed from mother to offspring, to see how pollution could affect newborn orcas in the wild.
They have a whole department dedicated to the education of guests at the parks. As well as using shows as an education experience.
Now, I’m not 100% sure, but I believe Seaworld does do outreach programs. Don’t quote me on it, I could be wrong. I do know they have animals they bring out to do outreach in the parks like owls and a beaver (I met the beaver it was incredible)
They are leaders in conservation, they are leaders in animal rescue. They are the standard that I know other zoos and aquariums try to reach when dealing with their own animals and facilities. They are participates in SSPs (species survival plans), breeding programs that ensure healthy genetic diversity in zoos and aquariums so that if animals do go extinct in the wild they’ll survive in facilities.
Seaworld does not use their animals strictly for entertainment. The animals are no means FORCED to participate in shows as many people believe. If an animal doesn’t want to participate, they’ll switch out animals, they try again later with that animal or they’re fed out, no animal is starved to do what they do. Shows are a way to keep animals exercised and entertained themselves. Most behaviors seen in a show are husbandry behaviors, behaviors that help animals health whether it be lining up for a trainer to look over and touch to see if something is wrong or to make sure an animal is exercising. Any “show” behaviors that seem just “tricks”, are probably to keep animals from being bored by learning new things.
Feel free to message me if you want to discuss more. If you even see it!
The wild is not some fantastical place where the animals live 'free'. They are a slave to nature, nature kills half of the litter of babies. Nature starves animals to death, in nature two animals of the same species will kill each other for territory or mates. Out in nature, animals consistently die of parasites. "They do this in the wild" is no excuse for taking dumb risks.
are you seriously pro-seaworld?? seriously??
I am. I feel like the ‘I stand with SeaWorld’ tag kind off spells it out. I’ve seen the good work zoos and aquariums do and most model practices after SeaWorld because they’re one of the leader in animal husbandry and training field. I’ve also witnessed SeaWorlds practices first hand and been to lectures on thier research and training that are helping make things better for both wild animals and animals in their care. No one is perfect but they are working and working to make it damn near perfect.
Also just a reminder that ANOTHER cetacean has died in an animal rights activist sea pen.

The rule change was made despite the fishing industry's having proposed the measures in the first place, according to a report.
I wonder if Animal Rights Activists are going to do some actual conservation work and reverse this to protect wild species or if they’re going to keep up with their “empty the tanks” nonsense. Cause obviously they’re SO much more protected in the wild than facilities.
when people tell me they think sloths are the cutest animals it makes me think that they never really looked at a sloth before cause they're weird af
Orcas are never meant to be captive. They have ailments and injuries because theyre not supposed to be in confined spaces.
Oceans are never meant to be overfished, polluted with plastic, oil, and noise, and filled with boats. Orcas have boat strikes, and are starving and dying because that’s not what the oceans are supposed to be like. Yet here we are. Orcas are dying and endangered, Seaworld is preventing their extinction. Message me and we can chat more about it.
