“ ‘Go on then. Whose is it?’
‘Know what?’
‘What?’
‘Last week somebody hands in a wallet. Been found in the IT Suite. Open it. Five hundred and sixty euros in there. So i tannoy the name. Bloke comes and collects it. German. Never even thanks me... The last wallet that got handed in. This was a few days ago. Found in the public toilets on the first floor. I open it. Driving license. A hundred and ninety quid in new notes. Probably not been in there long so I look at the photo and look for the bloke. I see him downstairs. Just sitting on one of the sofas, not reading or anything. I go up to him I say, “Are you missing anything, sir?” He looks up. Says “No.” I say, “What about this?” and hand him his wallet. He thanks me. But he’s upset, I can tell. He says, “I’m all at sixes and sevens.” I ask him why. He says, “I’ve just buried my daughter. She was thirty-four. Three kids.” I say, “I’m sorry,” but there’s nothing I can do for him.’”
