Today we define the word Provenance or Provenienz.
Provenance In the museum world, provenance is the full material history and ownership chronology of an item, from the time it was created or discovered, to the present day. The provenance determines the authenticity and legal ownership of the object. Provenance is especially important in museums, as it helps to assure curators that the object was not excavated or exported illegally before it came to the museum. Provenance research can also help identify forged paintings in art museums. Complete provenance of an object, especially of a work of art, is difficult, if not impossible, to establish, particularly if the item was created before the nineteenth century. Records often don't exist when items are sold privately or passed on to new owners. If an item was sold at auction, many private collectors buy and sell works of art anonymously. Gaps in the provenance do not immediately indicate that an item was stolen or is forged, only that insufficient records hindered the reconstruction of a complete ownership history.
Provenienz Im Museum steht der Begriff Provenienz für die Herkunft und der wechselnden Besitzerverhältnisse eines Kunstwerks oder Objekts. Die Provenienz bestimmt die Authentizität und das Eigentumsrecht eines Objekts. Provenienz ist im Museum besonders wichtig, da die Kuratoren es als Hilfsmittel benutzten um sicher zu stellen, dass ein Objekt nicht illegal ausgegraben oder exportiert wurde bevor es ins Museum kam. Provenienzforschung dient auch dazu, gefälschte Kunstwerke zu identifizieren. Eine vollständige Provenienz ist oft schwierig, wenn nicht unmöglich, zu bestimmen, besonders im Falle von Kunstwerken die vor 1900 erschaffen worden sind. Dokumentation existiert oft nicht wenn das Objekt privat verkauft wurde. Viele private Sammler kaufen Objekte die versteigert werden anonym. Lücken in der Provenienz eines Objekts deuten nicht sofort darauf hin, ob es gefälscht ist oder nicht, sondern zeigen zumindest, dass unzureichende Dokumentation eine vollständige Provenienz verhindert.
