01.08.18 Prototype Festival presented a performance of Matt Marks’ two-person opera The Little Death: Vol. 1 ,which follows Boy (played by Ted Hearne) and Girl (played by Mellissa Hughes), on a journey through the world of Fundamentalist Evangelism. Sadly, Matt Marks died in May 2018 at 38 years of age, and he originally played the lead in this opera. During this extraordinary performance, a film was projected showing Marks in the lead part from the opera’s premiere. The evening concluded with this video which was drawn from the album version.

01.09.18 I was totally blown away by Michael Gordon’s opera Acquanetta, presented by the Prototype Festival at Gelsey Kirkland Arts Center. Incredible staging and direction by Daniel Fish. Bravo!
Angel’s Bone opened the Prototype festival of opera and theater on Wednesday night at the Three Legged Dog Art & Technology Center. Technically a world premiere performance Wednesday night, the work has been in development since 2010 and was shown in a preview at the 2014 Prototype festival. The years of incubation are evident. Angel’s Bone is a fully realized vision. Spare yet complex, the work is a wholly original parable on the danger of greed. The work of composer Du Yun ranges across musical genres, from medieval polyphony to punk, in a way that interweaves and juxtaposes the sacred and the profane without ever degrading to pastiche.

The third season of the Prototype: Opera/Theatre/Now festival opened ominously last week, with 31 young women dressed in black singing against the evil that can come with group control. Toxic Psalms, performed by the Carmina Slovenica vocal theater company of Slovenia for five performances at St. Ann’s Warehouse, was a powerful 90-minute collision of music — ranging from medieval to modern — accented by movement.
