Attended the “Combahee River Collective Mixtape: Black Feminist Sonic Dissent Then and Now” at @barnardcollege featuring speakers Kara Keeling, Jacqueline Stewart, and my former college professor Daphne Brooks. Professor Brooks spoke about black women artists like Odetta, a folk singer and guitarist whose music influenced others, including Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin. Called the “Queen of American folk music” by Martin Luther King, Jr., Odetta was an out lesbian whose protest songs contributed to the Civil Rights Movement. With her performance at the March on Washington and at various other human rights events, Odetta’s legacy lives on in the likes of artists from Solange to Janelle Monae. . . . #odetta #odettaholmes #americanfolksinger #queenofamericanfolk #voiceofthecivilrightsmovement #blackartsmovement #protestmusic #civilrights #humanrights #blackfemalemusicians #blackfemalefolksingers #combaheerivercollective #queerstudies #blackandqueer #blackfeministmovement #feminism #intersectionality #intersectionalfeminism (at Diana Center, Barnard College)

Darrell Kelley presents: ICE Cold Killerz
A direct, narrative-driven single that confronts violence and accountability through pointed storytelling.
Darrell Kelley returns with “ICE Cold Killerz,” a hip hop and R&B single that leans into protest without losing its sense of structure. Darrell Kelley frames the track around the deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, grounding the song in specific names while expanding toward a broader critique of institutional force and silence.
Darrell uses a steady, deliberate vocal approach, allowing the weight of the subject to carry the performance rather than relying on vocal intensity. The production stays minimal, giving space for the narrative to unfold. There is a clear lineage in the influence of artists like Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, not in sound alone but in the commitment to message-driven songwriting.
The song’s hook repeats its central phrase with insistence, turning the title into both accusation and refrain. Rather than presenting abstract outrage, Darrell focuses on imagery and direct address, describing a sequence of events that questions authority and accountability. The writing avoids metaphor for long stretches, choosing clarity over ambiguity.
“ICE Cold Killerz” stands as a focused statement. Darrell Kelley uses the track to document, question, and insist on remembrance, keeping the listener close to the story from beginning to end.
